Queen Marie stands as an enduring, timeless model that Romania offers to the world.  Through her actions on behalf of her country, she became a universal archetype.

In the autumn of 1926, more exactly on October 18, the Romanian sovereign, accompanied by two of her five children, Princess Ileana and Prince Nicholas, embarked on a private visit to North America, a journey that would become legendary. Referred to in the press as the “American tour,” the visit lasted over a month, concluding on November 24.

Ștefania Dinu, a historian of the Romanian Royal House, described the queen’s 1926 visit as the realization of a long-held dream:  “It was a visit she had long desired. The idea of travelling to America was sparked in 1919 by two of her adventurous friends, the dreamers Loie Fuller and Samuel Hill, whom she had met in Paris, as well as by her American friends with whom she had worked during the First World War: Colonels Henry W. Anderson and Lytton Ament. The year 1926 finally brought this dream to fruition. Naturally, the visit was carefully planned, nothing was left to chance. A series of contracts were signed with American publications to feature a special column titled ‘The Queen’s Advice’. Through these texts, written by Queen Marie about the royal family and Romania, the American public truly began to get to know her.”

The Sovereign of Romania was making history once again, this time in the New World, leaving behind an extraordinary impression.

Ștefania Dinu: ”The Queen, who was also a talented writer, also signed an exclusive contract with the North American Newspaper Alliance, a syndicate of nearly 70 publications. She was tasked with writing 24 articles over the course of the tour. Consequently, upon retiring to her hotel room each evening, she would immediately set to work, capturing and sharing her impressions. Her reception in America was amazing, surpassing even her own expectations. She described it as a dreamlike experience, going beyond her imagination: the entire length of Broadway closed off, the Queen and her royal entourage riding in open-top cars, confetti raining down, and ticker-tapes cascading from skyscrapers, buildings so tall, she noted, that she could not even see their tops. The official reception in New York, hosted by the city’s municipal government, was equally extraordinary.”

America was captivated by a queen from a remote East European nation, a queen radiating charm, empathy, and grace.

Ștefania Dinu: “Most of the speeches she gave were improvised. She spoke in French, English, and Romanian, but what impressed her most was speaking on the radio. These broadcasts were heard by millions of Americans across the United States and Canada. She was received with great pomp and immense enthusiasm, meeting with governors, mayors, deputy mayors, presidents of chambers of commerce, photographers, and journalists. Upon her arrival in New York, for instance, a journalist even asked her how many biscuits she ate for breakfast, the kind of quintessentially American questions,  noted  reporters from the Romanian newspaper Universul, which held the exclusive rights to cover her visit. She was also asked why she was so adored by the crowds and why she enjoyed such immense success. Her reply was that she saw the individual trees before the entire forest. In other words, when looking out at a crowd, she would single out one face and gaze directly into that person’s eyes. To her, it wasn’t just an anonymous mass of people; it was a woman, a man, a child, a police officer. She explained that she smiled at everyone, stepping down from the distant, detached sovereign figure people expected to see. She was, above all, a warm, deeply empathetic person.”

Marie of Romania also left behind a moving record of her meeting with the descendants of America’s earliest inhabitants, the first nations.

Ștefania Dinu: ”She specifically desired a meeting with the native Americans, the Sioux, and met with Chief Red Tomahawk, from whom she received an eagle-feather headdress. She was given the title ‘Warrior Woman,’ as the tribal chief had been told of her extraordinary contributions during the First World War. Red Tomahawk felt the Queen was fully worthy of this honour. She was also given the name Winyan Kipanpi Win, which translates as ‘The Woman Who Is Waited For.’ The meaning behind this name was that the Romanian people needed Queen Marie and were calling out to her, as she was so far away from her own country. She confessed that she had hesitated for a long time to visit America, as the prospect of being so far away from Romania, and for such an extended period, deeply daunted her.”

One century ago, Queen Marie of Romania won over America, doing so through the sheer power of her personality and her genuine generosity toward everyone she met.
