Robert Glinţă
on Thursday won gold in the 100-m backstroke event at the European Swimming
Championships held in Budapest. This is Romania’s first medal in a European
event after a break of 17 years. The last medal scooped by Romania was Camelia
Potec’s gold in 2004 in Madrid in the 200-m freestyle event. Glinţă has secured
qualification to the Tokyo Olympics and will perform in the 100-m backstroke
event. Robert Glinţă also won silver in the 50-meter backstroke race.



Romania won six medals, one gold, one silver and four bronze on Sunday
at the World Rowing Championships hosted by Lucerne, Switzerland. The women’s
double-sculls crew made up Nicoleta-Ancuţa Bodnar and Simona Geanina Radiş won gold.
The silver went to Ionela-Livia Cozmiuc and Gianina-Elena Beleagă in the lightweight
women’s double-sculls event. The bronze medals were won by the women’s pair,
the men’s pair, the women’s quadruple sculls and the men’s quadruple sculls
crews. Romania ranked 7th in the medal standings. All the crews that
secured a medal have qualified to the Tokyo Olympics.



The Romanian women’s handball club CSM Bucharest has won the Romanian
domestic championship. With Cristina Neagu unavailable due to a knee injury,
CSM on Sunday defeated Măgura Cisnădie narrowly 26-25. CSM is first in the
tables with 76 points, followed by Minaur Baia Mare with 64 points and two
games left to play, and SCM Râmnicu Vălcea with 60 points and one game left to
play. CSM Bucharest also won the championship in the 2015-2018 period.



Universitatea Craiova on Saturday evening won the Romanian Cup in football
after defeating Astra Giurgiu 3-2 after extra time. This is the first game with
the physical attendance of fans at 25% stadium capacity since the start of the
pandemic. The match favorite was Universitatea after Astra unfortunately was
relegated to the second league. Craiova dominated the game and scored the first
goal on minute 14. Valerică Găman evened the odds on minute 17 from penalty
kick, and lead 2-1 in extra time after Yann Boe-Kane scored a goal on minute 93.
Dan Nistor made it 2-all on minute 100, while Vladimir Screciu scored the
winning goal on minute 113. Dan Nistor was declared man of the match with one
goal and two assists. (V.P.)
