The Professional
Football League has announced on its website that it would submit a proposal to
the Government regarding the resumption of the domestic championship at the end
of the state of emergency. In a press release, League Secretary General Justin
Stefan claims the risk of losing millions of euros in TV broadcasting rights
should create a consensus amidst the 14 clubs enrolled in the first league, in
order to complete the 2019-2020 football season on the pitch. Football competitions
were suspended originally until March 31, then the Emergency Committee of the
Romanian Football Federation postponed them again pending the lifting of the
state of emergency imposed to prevent the coronavirus pandemic from spreading.
The Competition Department of the Professional Football League submitted to the
Federation a timetable with all remaining football rounds until the end of the
season, which is due to resume on June 5.

The Romanian
women’s handball team will play directly in the 2020 European Championship,
slated for December in Norway and Denmark. All preliminary matches have been
canceled by the European Handball Federation. In the current preliminaries
Romania had four rounds left to play and had two wins in two matches in a Group
alongside Poland, Ukraine and the Faeroe Islands. The draw for the Championship
will be held on June 18 in Vienna. The EHF also concluded that continental
competitions can resume in June. Under these circumstances matches counting
towards the round of 16 and quarterfinals of the men’s Champions League have
been canceled. Dinamo Bucharest was due to compete in the round of 16 against
Paris Saint-Germain of France. Unfortunately it will thus leave the
competition, despite reporting not a single defeat in this year’s edition. The
men’s Final Four tournament will be held in Koln on December 28-29 and will
feature the top four teams in Groups A and B, namely Barcelona, Paris
Saint-Germain, Kiel and Veszprem.

Let us further
note that the Romanian Handball Federation has made public the official
timetable for the resumption of domestic competitions at the end of the state
of emergency. The first matches will thus take place on May 31 in the men’s
competition and on June 10 in the women’s competition.
