Last week the World Rowing Championships were held on Aiguebelette Lake in France. The competition had a very important stake, given that some of the events counted towards the Rio Olympics to be held next year. The objective of the Romanian Rowing Federation was to obtain qualification for at least three Romanian crews to the Olympic Games, an objective that has been met. The Romanian womens double-skull crew, made up of Cristina Grigoras and Laura Oprea won the B finals. The Romanian mens four-skull crew, made up of Dragos Aicoboae, Adrian Damii, Marius Cozmiuc and Andrei Gontaru ended the B final in 5th place and finally, the mens double-skull crew, made up of Cristi Pirghie and George Palamariu, ended the B final in 5th place.

Surprisingly, Romanias eight crew, made up of Roxana Cogianu, Iuliana Popa, Mihaela Petrila, Ioana Crăciun, Adelina Cojocariu, Irina Dorneanu, Mădălina Bereş, Andreea Boghian and Daniela Druncea failed to secure qualification to the Rio Olympics. Our girls didnt get to qualify to the A final. In the qualifying heat they finished the race in 3rd place, after Canada and New Zealand, while the re-qualifying heat they were outranked by the UK and Russia. On the competitions final day they won the B final in 6, minutes, 5.72 seconds, by 0.7 seconds less than the time obtained by the United States in the A final. However, the B final didnt offer any tickets to Rio, and therefore the last chance of qualifying to Rio will be in next years competition.

The biggest disappointing for the Romanian delegation in this years rowing championships was the failure of qualifying any crew to the final. 21 countries obtained medals at Aiguebelette, of which 8 grabbed at least one gold medal.
