Romania came third in the medal standings of
the games La Francophonie held a couple of days ago in Kinshasa, the capital of
the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Romanian athletes have been outperformed
only by the delegation of Morocco and have walked away with 17 gold, 9 silver
and 12 bronze medals.

Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu
remains in the higher ranking of the doubles competitions. Together with
Chilean Alexa Guarachi last week, the Romanian player made it to the finals of
the WTA 500 in Washington, a competition with 780 thousand dollars in prize
money. In the competition’s finals, the two conceded defeat to the
German-Russian pair, Laura Siegemund / Vera Zvonareva, 6-4, 6-4. The two have received
checks of 24,300 dollars and 305 WTA points.

To Niculescu WTA 500 has been the second WTA finals this year after the
one she lost in Bad Homburg together with Eri Hozumi of Japan. Monica won the
title in the 2016 edition in Washington jointly with Yanina Wickmayer of
Belgium.

Now let’s have a look at the latest from rugby competitions. In a
test-match held in Bucharest, the Romanian side has lost to the US selection
31-17. The hosts have scored three tries and managed to convert only one,
whereas the visitors have scored five tries and converted three. Romania has
two more test-matches in hand before the World Cup in France. Both are away
games against Georgia and Italy.

Last weekend saw the football matches counting towards the fourth leg of
Romania’s Super-league. On Friday in Arad, western Romania, local side UTA
secured a one-nil win against Poli Iasi, and the same score had the game
pitching Universitatea Craiova against Hermannstadt, on the former’s own turf
in southern Romania. On Saturday, FCU Craiova 1948 secured a 1-0 win against FC
Botosani, while in Mediaş, central Romania, Universitatea Cluj and Dinamo Bucharest
ended their game in a one-all draw. On Sunday, In Ploiesti, southern Romania,
local side Petrolul secured a 3-2 win against Farul Constanta. In Bucharest, FCSB
obtained 1-0 win against CFR Cluj. In the leg’s last two games on Monday, Sepsi
Sfântu Gheorghe takes on Oţelul Galaţi and FC Voluntari on Rapid Bucureşti.
FCSB tops the ranking with 12 points out of 12 possible, being followed by Universitatea
Craiova, four points less.
