The Emergency Committee of the Romanian Football Federation has adopted the program of the First League for the 2016-2017 edition. The season will start on July 23 and will end on June 4, 2017. The regular season will take place between July 23 and March 2017. The play-off phase will take place between March 11 and May 13, 2017, while the play-out phase will be played between March 11 and May 27. The Romanian Supercup will be played on July 16.

In a friendly match played in Poland, FC Viitorul Constanta drew 1-all against Cypriot champions APOEL Nicosia. In another friendly match, Romania’s champions Astra Giurgiu won narrowly 3-2 against Vasas Budapest, in a match played in Bakovci, Slovenia.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has extended the sanction against Astra Giurgiu coach Marius Sumudica to international competitions. The Appeal Committee of the Romanian Football Federation had originally applied a two-month suspension, forbidding Sumudica to sit on the bench for the first two matches Astra Giurgiu will play in the 2016-2017 edition of the Champions League preliminaries.

According to the official website of the Romanian Football Federation, FIFA ruled that the two-month ban should come into force on June 8. The original ruling was different, as the disciplinary regulations of the Romanian Football Federation stipulate that any sanctions are null in the inter-season break. Marius Sumudica will not be able to sit on the bench for his club at the Romanian Supercup match of July 16 as well as for the first fixture for Astra on July 24. Sumudica received a disciplinary sanction on February 29, forbidding him any involvement in football-related activities for a period of six months, as well as a 22-thousand euro fine for illegal gambling.

The former head of the Professional Football League, Dumitru Dragomir, was sentenced to 7 years in prison after a ruling of the Bucharest Tribunal. Dragomir is accused of tax evasion and embezzlement in a case involving the awarding of audiovisual broadcasting rights. The decision can be appealed.
