We start today’s sports review with tennis. The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has again failed to become the world’s no. 1 player. She lost the final of the Cincinnati tournament, with more than two million and a half dollars in prize money. Halep lost 6-1, 6-0 to Spanish player Garbine Muguruza. It is for the third time this year that Simona Halep has missed the opportunity to become WTA’s 1st- ranked player. First, she lost the Roland Garros final to Latvian player Jelena Ostapenko, and secondly Simona failed to qualify to the Wimbledon semifinals, being defeated in the quarterfinals by British player Johanna Konta.

Romania had another player in the Cincinnati WTA tournament’s doubles finals, namely Monica Niculescu. The pair made up of the Taiwanese player Su-Wei Hsieh and Monica Niculescu was defeated by the pair Martina Hingis (Switzerland)/ Yung-Jan Chan(Taiwan) 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Next we’ll bring you the results of the football games played this past weekend in the 7th leg of the championship of Romania’s League One. On Friday in Giurgiu, Astra ended in a goaless draw their match against Poli Iaşi. Saturday’s matches were won by the guest teams, away from home. Thus Poli Timişoara won the match against Gaz Metan, in Mediaş, FCSB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, won 2-1 the match in Ploieşti against Juventus Bucureşti.

On Sunday the en-titre champion Viitorul Constanţa, trained by Gheorghe Hagi, lost in Ovidiu, on home turf, 2-0, to CSU Craiova. Also on Sunday, CFR Cluj, clinched a two-nil home win against FC Voluntari. Monday will see the last two matches of the 7th leg, when FC Botoşni will be pitted against Concordia Chiajna and Dinamo Bucharest will take on Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe. CFR Cluj ranks first in the standings of the first Romanian football league.
