Simona Halep to miss Tokyo Olympics

World no. 3 in
women’s tennis and Romanian no. 1 Simona Halep on Monday night confirmed on
Twitter that she will be unable to travel to Tokyo for the Olympic Games
because of a calf injury. An announcement regarding her withdrawal had already
been made by the president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee Mihai
Covaliu, who told Agerpres that Halep decided not to go to Tokyo after doctors
who examined her this week told her she would not be able to play tennis for at
least another four weeks. In May, Halep was forced to withdraw in the second
round in Rome with the injury and also missed Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Simona Halep is the
best player in the history of Romanian women’s tennis. She was born on 27 September
1991 in Constanţa. In October 2017 she became number one in the world, a
position she kept until January 2018. She went back to being number one that
same year in February, and stayed there until after the start of 2019, after
the Australian Open, when she was no. one for 64 weeks. She won two Grand Slam
tournament tiles, at Roland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019 and 22 WTA
titles. She took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London where she lost in the
first round. In 2016 she missed the Rio Games because of fears over the Zika
