Romania’s women’s lightweight double sculls and men’s pair crews on Thursday qualified for the finals at the World Rowing Championships underway in Bulgaria. Defending world champions Ionela-Livia Cozmiuc and Gianina-Elena Beleaga came in first in the first semifinal of the lightweight double sculls race, while the United States were the runner-ups.

In the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls race, Mihai-Vasile Ţigănescu, Cosmin Pascari, Ştefan-Constantin Berariu and Ciprian Huc made it to the finals, with the third timing of the first semifinal, being outclassed by Australia and the Netherlands. In the men’s double sculls race, Ionuţ Prundeanu and Marian-Florian Enache came in 2nd in the third series of the repechage race and will compete in the semifinals. The coxless men’s pair crew, made up by Marius-Vasile Cozmiuc and Ciprian Tudosă will compete in the semifinals, having won the first quarterfinal. Romania’s women’s coxless four and quadruple sculls crews wasted the opportunity to qualify for the finals.

We carry on with news from tennis. Romania’s Davis Cup team in Cluj this coming weekend faces Poland. The match is crucial for promoting to the Europe-Africa Zone’s Group I, an echelon Romania was demoted from, in 2017. Romanian team’s only novelty is ATP men’s singles rankings 609th-palced Bogdan Ionuţ Apostol. Also summoned for the singles’ games were ATP 81st-ranked Marius Copil and Adrian Ungur, currently 674th-placed according to the ATP rankings. In the men’s doubles, Gabriel Trifu counts on 25th-ranked Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea, currently 689th-ranked according to the ATP classification. We recall that in July 2015 Mergea was7th-placed according to world rankings, while in 2016 he emerged as Olympic vice-champion in Rio.

The Romanian news agency Agerpress reports that in 2018 Adrian Ungur played only two matches, of which he won one in Cluj in April against Morocco’s Lamine Ouahad, and another one, last month, against Mihnea Turcu in a futures tournament in Bucharest. After that, Ungur retired from competition. We recall that Adrian Ungur lost a doubles match in the aforementioned tournament, pairing up with Matei Georgescu.

We go out with news from football, as at the weekend, matches are being played, counting towards League One championship’s eighth round. On Friday, Concordia Chiajna take on Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, while Dinamo Bucharest play Astra Giurgiu. On Saturday, Dunărea Călăraşi face FC Botoşani at home, while Gaz Metan Mediaş receive the visit of Universitatea Craiova. On Sunday, FC Voluntari are pitted against Politehnica Iaşi, while in Cluj, the championship’s derby will see CFR taking on FCSB. The eighth round’s last fixture is scheduled on Monday, as in the southern Romanian town of Ovidiu, Viitorul Constanţa face FC Hermannstadt. FCSB are at the top of the table with 14 points, followed by CFR Cluj, with 12 points.
