As of this week, Simona Halep has climbed to the 2nd position of the WTA ranking. Halep outclassed Czech contender Petra Kvitova, who thus dropped one place, being now ranked 3rd in the WTA classification. Top of the classification continues to be Japan’s Naomi Osaka. Simona Halep’s present position has been possible thanks to her excellent run in the Miami tournament, an event with more than nine million USD in prize money. Halep reached as far as the semifinals, where she sustained a defeat by Czech challenger Carolina Pliskova in two sets, 7-5, 6-1. Had she outclassed Pliskova, Simona Halep would have once again claimed the top position in the WTA rankings.

Now new from ice hockey. Sports Club Miercurea Ciuc sustained a 2-3 defeat by Hungarian opponents Ferenvcaros Budapest this past Sunday. The match counted as the fourth fixture in the Erste Liga regional ice hockey competition. We recall Sports Club Miercurea Ciuc won the first leg in Budapest, 7-3. However, Ferencvaros grabbed three wins in a row, 7-2 at home, then 2-1 and 3-2 in Miercurea Ciuc. The fifth match is scheduled this coming Tuesday in Budapest. The final is played according to the best-out-of-seven -matches system.



We continue with news from women’s basketball. Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe has won Romania’s Cup in women’s basketball. This past Sunday, Sepsi outclassed Municipal Satu Mare in the finals, 69-65. Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe won the trophy for the fifth time around. We recall Sepsi had also won the trophy in 2008, 2015, 2016 and 2018.



In women’s volleyball, in Romania’s championship derby, CSM Bucharest grabbed an away win against Volei Alba Blaj, 3-1. The win has earned CSM the 1st place in the table, with 44 points from 17 games played. Volei Alba Blaj are 2nd placed, with 43 points from 16 games.



We end this week’s roundup of the main sports events with domestic football, as on Sunday, FCSB grabbed a 3-2 home win in the derby they played against Universitatea Craiova. The match counted towards Group 1’s 3rd round. This past Sunday, also in Group 1, CFR defeated Astra Giurgiu, 1-nil. CFR Cluj are at the top of the table, with 36 points, followed by FCSB, with 31 and Universitatea Craiova, with 29 points. In Group 2 on Friday, Dinamo Bucharest grabbed a 2-nil home win against FC Hermannstadt, FC Voluntari grabbed a 2-1 win against Concordia Chiajna, while Gaz Metan Medias grabbed an away win against Poli Iasi, also 2-1.
