Last week’s most important sporting performance was the headway made by Romania’s ice hockey side in the second world echelon, after coming first in group B of the world Championship staged in Talin, Estonia. Coached by Slovakian Julius Penzes, the Romanians won all their matches in the group against Poland, Japan, the Netherlands and Estonia.



Three Romanian tennis players have qualified for the second round of the WTA tournament in Madrid. Sorana Carstea, who benefited from a wildcard, has secured her most important win this year against 13th-seeded US challenger Madison Keys, whom she defeated 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Mihaela Buzarnescu on Sunday qualified for the second round after defeating Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Also in the first round the world’s third tennis player Simona Halep defeated Margarita Gasparian of Russia 6-0, 6-4.



Romanian volleyball side, CSM Arcada Galati have for the first time become national champions after a 3-0 away win against Steaua Bucharest. In the women’s competition CSM Volei Alba Blaj on Saturday secured their fourth title of champions after also a three-nil win against Stiinta Bacau. Incumbent champions CSM Bucharest have lost 1-3 their away game against CSM Targoviste.



Last weekend saw the games of the 8th leg of the Romanian football championship. On Friday Concordia Chiajna ended in a two-all draw their game against FC Botosani, while Gaz Metan Medias thrashed FC Hermannstadt Sibiu 4-1. On Saturday, Dunarea Calarasi obtained a one-nil win against Dinamo Bucharest while FC Voluntari and CSM Poli Iasi ended in a goaless draw. On Saturday, Viitorul Constanta secured a three-one win against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe and FCSB clinched a two-nil away win against Universitatea Craiova. CFR ranks first in the standings with 44 points, followed by FCSB with 42 and Universitatea Craiova with 36.
