The Romanian-Dutch pair made of Horia Tecău and Jean-Julien Rojer this past Sunday won the mens doubles finals at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid, an event with more than 6,500,000 USD in prize money. In the final, Tecau and Rojer defeated the Argentinean – Austrian pair made of Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem, 6-4, 6-3. In the womens singles, also in Madrid, Simona Halep reached as far as the final where she sustained a 6-4, 6-4 defeat by her Dutch challenger Kiki Bertens this past Saturday.


In news from womens handball, SCM Ramnicu Valcea walked away with their first national title, one round ahead of the final part of the competition season. On Sunday, SCM secured a 29-26 home win against CSM Slatina, in a fixture counting towards the National Leagues 25th round.


In other news from womens handball, the Hungarian side Győr for the third time around won the Champions League. In Budapest this past Sunday, Gyor secured a 25-24 final win against Russias Rostov Don. Playing for Gyor was the Romanian pivot Crina Pintea.


In news from mens handball, the Romanian side CSM Bucharest drew against Portuguese contenders Madeira Andebol 22-all, in a fixture counting towards the first leg of the Challenge Cup, away from home. The return leg is scheduled on Saturday, May 18, in Bucharest.


In news from football, CFR Cluj are the new champions, one round ahead of the end of the National Leagues group 1. In Group 1s 9th round on Sunday night, CFR Cluj secured a 1-nil home win against Universitatea Craiova. CFR are still five points clear of 2nd-placed team, FCSB. In Group 2 on Friday, FC Botosani grabbed a 2-nil home win against FC Voluntari. Also 1-nil was the winning score for Dinamo Bucharest against Gaz Metan Medias, on the former teams home turf. On Saturday in Sibiu, FC Hermannstadt secured 1-nil win against Concordia Chiajna. On home turf, Poli Iasi trounced Dunarea Calarasi, 4-nil. In Group 1 on Saturday, FCSB grabbed a 5-1 away win against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe. (Translated by Eugen Nasta)
