The 2019-2020
edition of the Romanian Football Cup has reached the round of 16, with matches
being played this week. Two teams have already secured qualification: FC
Hermannstadt and FCSB.

On Tuesday, FC
Hermannstadt won away from home against the second-tier team FC Mioveni, 2-nil.
The team from Sibiu won its first match with coach Eugen Neagoe at its helm.
The goals were scored by Daniel Offenbacher on minute 65 and by Mattia Persano
in stoppage time. These were the first goals for Hermannstadt scored by both
footballers. FCSB on the other hand advanced to the quarterfinals of the
Romanian Football Cup after winning against the second-tier team Universitatea
Cluj 1-nil on Cluj Arena. Ioan Hora scored the goal for FCSB on minute 12 from
free kick. FCSB goalie Andrei Vlad was declared man of the match, with multiple
saves. Towards the end of the game, on minute 87, Florin Tanase missed a
penalty kick for FCSB, his shot being saved by Universitatea goalkeeper Cosmin
Dur-Bozoanca.

Another three
matches are scheduled on Wednesday: Academica Clinceni will play FC Botosani,
Sanatatea Cluj will go up against Petrolul Ploiesti, while Foresta Suceava will
play Dinamo Bucharest. The last three matches are scheduled for Thursday.
Metalul Buzau will play Poli Iasi, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe will take on Astra
Giurgiu, and FC Voluntari will play Universitatea Craiova.

Let us further
note that the first edition of Romania’s Football Cup was held in 1933, and the
first club to win the Cup was Ripensia Timisoara, which defeated Universitatea
Cluj in the 1933-1934 season final. The match was played on the ONEF stadium in
Bucharest, renamed the Republica Stadium after 1948, and later demolished in
order to make room for the current Parliament Palace in the capital city. The
team that has won the most editions of the competition, namely 22, is Steaua
Bucharest. The club has also lost another 8 finals. Two other teams from
Bucharest, Dinamo and Rapid, have won the Cup 13 times each.
