Romanian
football champions CFR Cluj had a perfect start in the Europa League group
phase. Last Thursday, Dan Petrescu’s trainees defeated CSKA Sofia of Bulgaria
2-nil, and is now top of the tables in Group A. Ciprian Deac had a stellar performance,
contributing to both goals scored by the Romanian side. On minute 53, Adrian
Păun took a shot corner, Deac sent a superb cross into the penalty box and
Venezuelan striker Mario Rondon sent the ball into the back of the net with a
header. Twenty minutes later, Croatian player Gabriel Debeljuh was tackled
illegally in the penalty area, and the referee ruled penalty kick. Deac scored
easily, setting the final score, 2-nil. For his crucial contribution to CFR’s
win in Sofia, we have designated Ciprian Deac Athlete of the Week on RRI.

Criprian Deac
was born February 16, 1986 in Bistriţa. He made his debut with the local side,
Gloria, then he moved to Unirea Dej. In 2006 he was first transferred to CFR
Cluj. He was then signed by Oţelul Galaţi. In 2010 he played in Bundesliga for
Schalke 04, although he spent much of his time at the German club on the substitutes
bench. Also in 2010 he made his debut for Romania’s national team, in a match
against Israel. Overall he has 24 caps for the national team. In 2012 Ciprian
Deac returned to CFR, where he played for another three years, then he transferred
to Kazakhstan. He played for two clubs, FC Aktobe and FC Tobol. After a
two-year spell he returned to CFR Cluj for the third time in his career.

On Thursday, CFR
Cluj will play its second match in the current edition of Europa League. CFR
will go up against Young Boys Berne of Switzerland on home turf. In the first
group fixture, the Swiss team lost at home 1-2 to AS Rome of Italy.
