The Romanian SuperLeague
rugby championship has recently drawn to a close. This season’s title holders are
Stiinta Baia Mare. This past Saturday in the championship’s closing round,
Stiinta thrashed Steaua Bucharest, 11 to 3. For three years now, Stiinta Baia
Amare have emerged as Romania’s domestic champions. The SuperLeague’s bronze
medals went to Dinamo Bucharest. Also on Saturday, Dinamo grabbed a 16-11 win
against Club Municipal Timișoara.

For Romanian rugby, a string
of international matches is on schedule. On November 6, the national team play
a testing match against Uruguay. We recall Uruguay have already booked their
ticket for the 2023 edition of the World Cup in France. The match against Uruguay
will be hosted by the Triumphal Arch National stadium in Bucharest. Romania’s
head coach, Andy Robinson, has announced he has summoned an extended, 39-strong
pool of regulars ahead of the match against Uruguay. 12 of the rugby players
are signed up by foreign teams, mainly from France. The training stage for the
match against Uruguay will be held in Snagov.

Also on home turf, Romania’s
Rugby Europe Championship fixture against The Low Countries representative is
scheduled on November 13. Romania is 3rd-placed according to the competition’s
as-it-stands table, after Georgia and Portugal. Then the national squad takes
on the national team of Tonga on November 20. The latter team also fights for
the qualification to the World Cup in France.

Romania’s Cup final is
scheduled on November 27. Stiinta Baia Mare face Sport Club Municipal
Timișoara. The Romanian Rugby Federation has not yet made public the venue for
the match. We recall Timisoara secured their qualification to the Cup final as
in a semi-final fixture in August this year, they defeated Steaua Bucharest,
18-16, on the latter team’s Ghencea stadium. Also in August, trophy holders
Stiinta Baia Mare grabbed a 35-21 home win against Dinamo Bucharest. Ştiinţa won
the trophy six times, while Timisoara, four times.
