Dan Carpov, representing the Office for Tourist Information and Mountain Rescue for Maramures County, spoke about what tourists can see in Maramures: Everyone enjoys this holiday. There are traditions that others forgot, but we still keep. Maramures is like a living museum. We have many nationalities here, Romanian, Hungarian, Jews, and Germans, and you can see this everywhere, including the music. People wear traditional clothes casually, and they cook traditional food on a daily basis. You are welcome here at any time of the year, but especially at Easter. We even have an app for smartphones called Visit Maramures, where you can see all events, for Easter or the rest of the year.”
Dan Carpov has also said: “Maramures is a must see, with its wooden churches, its unique sites, such as the Merry Cemetery. We also have the narrow gauge train, which is practically a landmark. It is the train that carries tourists who want to see the wilderness, which is the latest fashion. We have offers valid for May Day and Easter. Of late, it works 24-7, this is how high the demand is. Prices are decent, and we are talking about what Romanians can afford, let alone foreign tourists. More recently, considering the dynamic market, we started coming up with new things, such as brunches, lunches, full accommodation. This is quite unique in Romania, it is authentic, you can only find two or three other places like this in the country.”
Catalina Velniciuc, representative of the National Tourism Information and Promotion Center with Suceava County Council, told us how important Easter is in Bukovina: “In our parts, women still paint eggs with a small brush. The festivities start with Passion Week. Everyone goes to mass every evening. We have a great feast on Maundy Thursday, in Poiana Stampei, where we have a bonfire every year. This is a purifying fire. Then comes Resurrection. It is a special event which we hold in Cacica Salt Mine. We call it Resurrection in the deep. During Easter, we have lots of live music, with locals hosting events all around.”
We also spoke about Bukovina with Cristian Catana, PR representative for the Cultural, Ecological and Rural Tourism National Association, who told us about more venues to visit: “You can find there the Museum of Painted Eggs. However, local traditional houses are decorated just as richly. In addition to Maramures and Bukovina, I would also recommend the area of Valcea, with a higher number of wooden churches than in the previous two places. The area of Gorj is also rich in traditional venues, as well as the mountainous area of Banat, at the so-called Danube Cauldron. If you go to Mehedinti or the Danube Delta, where the river Danube flows in and out of Romania, it is very interesting to see the boats come and go. In the Delta, we go by boat to local churches to light the traditional candles on Resurrection night.”
Nicoleta Gilmeanu represents the tourism office of Buzau County Council. She highly recommends her area as an Easter retreat: “I have good arguments for that. Buzau is a county of old wooden churches and monasteries. Everyone knows Ciolanul Monastery, and people come from far and away to visit it, in addition to Rătești Monastery, or Poiana Marului. Some of the monasteries offer accommodation, and all have a small museum dedicated to the history of the place.”
In the west part of the country, in Baile Felix, a year-round spa, they are prepared for the influx of tourists: “The special package for Easter includes three nights accommodation, double room, breakfast included, one spa therapy session per person, Easter lunch and pool access for three and four star hotels, starting at 329 lei a person, reaching 558 lei per person for a four star hotel. In May, prices match Easter. For Palm Sunday, packages are the same, three nights accommodation, double room, breakfast, spa, a special lunch and access to swimming pools. Lets not overlook the entertainment team for the kids. They are some of our star tourists. We have creative workshops for them, with all kinds of activities, such as face painting.”
