Romania participated with six athletes in the Paralympic Games that ended in Paris on Sunday. These are Alexandru Bologa and Daniel Vargoczki in judo contests for the visually impaired, Eduard Novak and Theodor Matican in cycling races Camelia Ciripan and Bobi Simion in table tennis. Bologa became gold medalist in the 73 kilogram category and Ciripan walked away with silver from the individual contest. Thanks to their results, Romania came 63rd in the nations ranking, which was dominated by China.

We continue with handball as the women’s competition of the Champions League has just kicked off.

Two Romanian sides met in Group A on Saturday, and Gloria Bistrita secured a 30-26 home win against CSM Bucharest. The best players of the Transylvanian side were the Russian Valeria Kirdiiasheva, the Spanish Seynabou Mbengue Rodriguez, and Asuka Fujita of Japan, with six goals each. Elizabeth Omoregie scored most of the goals for the Bucharest side.

Also in Group A, on Saturday, Slovenian side Krim Ljubljana, compelled recognition against Podravka Koprivnica, 24-23, and Ferencváros clinched a 31- 22 home win against Danish side Nykøbing Falster. On Sunday in Norway, Storhamar and the French side Metz ended their game in a 29-all draw. Gloria will be taking on Metz in an away game and CSM will be playing Storhamar in Bucharest.

The other Romanian side in the competition, Rapid Bucharest, secured a 32-27 home win against Buducnost Podgorica of Montenegro in a match counting towards Group B. Serbian player Anđela Janjušević was Rapid’s best player with 8 goals scored. In the other Group B games held on Saturday, the Hungarian side Győr clinched a 28-26 win against the Danish from Esbjerg, while the French squad Brest Bretagne outperformed the Norwegians from Vipers Kristiansand 30-27. On Sunday, Odense defeated in Denmark the Germans from Ludwigsburg, 28-22. Rapid will next be up against Vipers Kristiansand in an away match on September 14.

Romania’s new rugby champions are SCM USV Timişoara, which secured a 22-21 win in Bucharest on Sunday against CSM Ştiinţa Baia Mare in the finals of the National League. The champions won through a try and five penalty shots.

In the match for the third position Steaua secured a 36-30 win against archrivals Dinamo. This is the sixth national title Timişoara has won so far.
