Who’s competing in the parliamentary elections
The registration period for the parliamentary elections in Romania has ended, and the political parties have placed well-known names in the opening of the candidate lists, especially in Bucharest

21 political parties and groups submitted lists of candidates for the general elections that will determine the composition of the Parliament in Bucharest. October 17 was the last day on which applications were accepted. The fiercest competition is for the seats of senators and deputies in the Capital, where well-known politicians are top of the lists. The list of Social Democrats running for the Senate is opened by the doctor Adrian Streinu-Cercel, and for the Chamber of Deputies, the head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery, Mihai Ghigiu, is the first.
The first in the Liberals’ list for the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies are the former minister of education Sorin Câmpeanu and the minister of energy, Sebastian Burduja respectively. The Save Romania Union has the former mayor of district 1 of Bucharest Clotilde Armand for the Chamber of Deputies and the former Minister of Economy Claudiu Năsui in the first position for the Senate.
For the Forţa Dreptei group, the former prime minister Ludovic Orban opens the list for the Chamber of Deputies, and the president of the Popular Movement Party, Eugen Tomac, is the first for the Senate. The former minister of sports, Eduard Novak, is running in the capital on behalf of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians for a deputy position.
The Alliance for the Union of Romanians has the coordinator of the Department of Economic Analysis of the University Foundation of the Black Sea, Petrişor Peiu, in the first position for the Senate, while the leader of the party, George Simion, and the businessman Gigi Becali open the list for the Chamber of Deputies. The former head of the Environmental Guard, Octavian Berceanu, opens the Senate list of the REPER Party, while the parliamentarian Cătălin Teniță is the first for the Chamber of Deputies.
The former journalist Sanda Nicola is the first on the list of the Romania in Action Party, which supports the former deputy secretary of NATO Mircea Geoană in the presidential race. As for the list for parliamentary seats for the diaspora, 18 parties and two independents entered the competition. The Liberals will have candidates only in the Senate, and Forta Dreptei only in the Chamber of Deputies, after the court rejected some candidacies, following appeals. The order on the ballot papers for the diaspora, established by the Central Electoral Bureau, places the USR, Forţa Dreptei and UDMR candidates in the first positions.
As regards postal voting, the Permanent Electoral Authority has reported that 6,839 Romanians abroad opted for this method of expressing their political will, most of them from Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland. The general elections are organized this year on Romania’s National Day, on December 1, and are flanked by the two voting rounds for the designation of the country’s president, on November 24 and December 8, respectively. Abroad, the parliamentary vote will take place over two days, November 30 and December 1, respectively. (MI)
