The Romanian tennis player Anca Todoni has won the WTA 125 tournament in Antalya, with 115 thousand dollars in prize money. The Romanian has outperformed in a two-setter 6-3, 6-2 the Spanish challenger Leyre Romero Gomez. This has been the third WTA 125 title obtained by Todoni, after those in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and in Bari, Italy last year. The victory in Antalya has brought Anca 15,500 dollars and 125 WTA points.

Unfortunately the delegation representing Romania at the World Athletics Indoor Championships that just ended in Nanjing, China, has left the competition without any medals. The best Romanian performance was obtained by Alina Rotaru – Kottmann, who came fifth in the long jump event, while the Romanian shot-putter Rares Toader, who is also the European indoor champion, went seventh in the competition. In the triple jump event, Diana Ion, silver medalist at the European Championship, came ninth in the rankings.

The Romanian women’s handball side CSM Bucharest has made a big step towards the quarter finals of the Champions League. On Saturday, the Romanian champions clinched a 34-24 win against Rapid Bucharest in the first round of the playoffs.  Cristina Neagu was the CSM’s main scorer, with 10 goals. The Dutch player Estevana Polman scored seven goals for Rapid Bucharest. The return game is due on Saturday also in Bucharest.

The EHF European League, the second European competition in terms of value, had the first round of its quarterfinals. On Saturday, SCM Ramnicu Valcea lost to German side Thuringer, 29-35, while on Sunday, in Denmark, Dunarea Braila conceded defeat to Ikast 32-30.  The return games are due in Romania over the weekend. Braila will play on Saturday and Valcea on Sunday.

ACSH Gheorgheni is Romania’s new champion in ice hockey after their 2-1 win in the finals against the former champions Corona Brasov. Steaua Bucharest won the bronze medal after a 4-0 victory against Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc.
