The debut of Romania’s football side in the preliminaries of World Cup 2026 was below par. Last Friday, the trainees of headcoach Mircea Lucescu lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Bucharest nil-one. In spite of a relatively good show with several notable chances, the Romanian side had to concede defeat as they lacked the ambition and determination they showed in the qualifiers for the European Championship last year when they ended first in a group, which also included Ukraine, Belgium and Slovakia. What we saw last Friday was a mediocre team with footballers from Europe’s major championships who proved to be a disappointment to fans.

Next was the game on Monday against San Marino, a football side at the bottom of the world ranking. Romania managed to clinch a 5-1 win against an ambitious side, which proved to be a real challenge mainly in the first part of the game.

After the first two legs, when Austria played no game at all, Bosnia and Herzegovina tops the ranking with six points. Romania comes second with three points, like Cyprus, which ranks third because they outperformed San Marino at a lower score.

Austria ranks fourth without any point and San Marino on the fifth position with no point and a goal average of minus six.

The Romanian football Super-league continues this weekend with the second leg of its final stage. The first match on Sunday will be a derby pitching Dinamo against FCSB, two sides from Bucharest. Although Dinamo plays on their home turf, FCSB is the odds-on favourite as it relies on a better line-up and has won the latest direct matches. Nevertheless the champions cannot rely on some of their best players.

Daniel Bârligea and Florin Tănase, got injured while playing for the national side and newspapers are also talking about injuries sustained by Cameroonian Joyskim Dawa.
