Skater Julia Sauter, a German athlete competing for Romanian has qualified to the Winter Olympic Game, to be held in Italy’s Milan in 2026. She came in 16th in the short program as part of the World Artistic Skating Championships hosted by the city of Boston, in the USA. Sauter will thus compete in the long program, where the first 24 skaters have got through.
Julia’s top-flight performance means meeting the standards set for the participation to the Olympic Games. Notwithstanding, in order to represent Romania, according to the Olympic regulations, Julia Sauter needs to be granted the Romanian citizenship. According to Ms Sauter the process is underway.
Romanian ice hockey teams ACSH Gheorghieni and Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc Wednesday night won the Erste Liga regional competition semifinals. On home turf, ACSH Gheorgheni defeated holders Corona Braşov, 1-nil. Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc grabbed a 2-nil away win again Jegkorong Akademia in Budapest. The two Harghita-based teams now have a 2-nil win in the semifinals, held after the-best-in-seven-games system.
The next fixtures are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday in Brasov and Miercurea-Ciuc, respectively.
Romanian men’s handball team Dinamo Bucharest this past Wednesday sustained a 20-26 home defeat German opponents Magdeburg, in the first leg of the Champions League’s playoffs. The match was hosted by the ”Ioan Kunst-Ghermănescu” Multi-purpose Sports Hall in Bucharest.
Dinamo’s Ukrainian player Andriy Akimenko was the top scorer, with six goals. The return leg is scheduled in Dessa on April 2nd. Magdeburg are ranked as favorites to advancing to the Champions League’s quarterfinals.
In women’s handball, this past Wednesday Rapid Bucharest took on CSM Bucharest, in League One’s derby. Holders CSM Bucharest won by the narrowest margins, 26-25. With six goals scored, CSM Bucharest’s Cristina Neagu was the team’s top scorer.
For Rapid Bucharest, the most efficient scorer was the Serbian Angela Ianiuşevici, with 10 goals. CSM also defeated Rapid on Saturday, 34-24 in the first leg as part of the Champions League’s playoffs. The match was hosted by Ioan Kunst Ghermanescu Multi-Purpose Sports Hall in Bucharest.
CSM will again face Rapid Bucharest in the return leg this coming Saturday, also in the Multi-Purpose Sports Hall in Bucharest. CSM is also likely to play Rapid in the Romanian Cup final, if they go past the semifinals.
