NATO. Romania’s interim president Ilie Bolojan on Sunday issued a statement on the celebration of NATO Day in Romania and the 21st anniversary of the country’s joining this organisation. He said that in the current international context, more than ever, NATO membership is a security guarantee and a solid basis for Romania’s further development and positioning as a pillar of stability in the region and a responsible ally. Owing to the NATO structures it is hosting and the participation of Romanian soldiers to the NATO battle group in Poland and the enhanced air policing missions in the Baltic states, Romania plays an important role in strengthening the allied deterrence and defence posture on the eastern flank, Ilie Bolojan also said in his statement. He added that Bucharest will continue to support Ukraine with a view to achieving fair and sustainable peace. Defence minister Angel Tîlvăr said the values promoted by the Washington Treaty are essential landmarks for Romanians, and the transatlantic relationship remains an essential pillar of collective defence. The minister recalled that NATO membership was a major goal for all Romanians, regardless of their political convictions and social status and an essential step towards consolidating the country’s security and stability, demonstrating commitment to democratic values. Romania joined NATO in April 2004.

Energy. Romania contributes solutions, partnerships and dialogue and active energy diplomacy. Together we are building a safe, accessible and sustainable future for the region and for Europe, energy minister Sebastian Burduja posted on Saturday. On the sidelines of the minister-level meeting in Baku to discuss the Southern Gas Corridor, he held a series of meetings on Romania’s involvement in strategic energy projects in the region and the development of this sector at home. The Romanian official met US State Department representative Erik Jacobs and discussed the two countries’ solid partnership in the energy field, including the development of reactors 3 and 4 in Cernavodă, small modular reactors and expanding production from renewable sources, including geothermal energy. Burduja had talks with Turkish energy minister Alparslan Bayraktar on Black Sea cooperation in the field of natural gas and nuclear and renewable energy and with Moldova’s energy minister Dorin Junghietu on the further interconnection of gas and electricity projects.

Ukraine. The European and euro-Atlantic agenda will be dominated in the coming days by the situation in Ukraine, especially the efforts of western countries to continue support for Kyiv. Brussels will host on 9th April the 10th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Association Council.  The two sides will exchange views on the situation created by Russia’s war in Ukraine, with an emphasis on the military, economic and humanitarian situation on the ground and the response to the Russian aggression. On 10th April, the United Kingdom and France will organise a Coalition of the Willing meeting attended by defence ministers and hosted at the NATO headquarters. This initiative, led by the UK and France, brings together 31 countries, including Romania, who promised consolidated support for Ukraine against Russia’s aggression.

Tariffs. The new tariffs policy of the Trump administration has sparked large scale protests in Europe and the United States, where demonstrators denounced the deviation from democracy and the commercial and social policies of Donald Trump. According to Radio Romania’s US correspondent, hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated against Trump and his administration in more than 1,000 cities across the 50 US states. They protested against the influence of billionaires, a direct reference to Elon Musk, the aggressive corruption of the administration, a halt to cuts in social security and healthcare and a halt to attacks against immigrants and marginalised communities.  The protests came after the Wall Street stock exchange fell to historic lows as a result of Trump’s new tariffs on imports.

Tennis. Argentina’s Sebastian Baez, seeded first, and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli, seeded third, are today playing the Ţiriac Open final in Bucharest, an ATP tennis tournament worth almost 600,000 euros. In the semis, Baez defeated defending champion Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in straight sets, while Cobolli defeated Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia, who had eliminated Romania’s Filip Jianu in the previous round.

Weather. Romania is in the grips of a cold spell, with highs ranging from 2 to 10 degrees Celsius. A yellow code alert is in place for strong winds across the country. Wind speeds of 50-70 km per hour are expected, even hitting 100 km per hour at high altitudes. Mixed precipitation is reported in the south, and snow in the rest of the country, with a layer of snow of 5 to 10 cm forecast in the mountains. Snow removal equipment was dispatched on Saturday night on national roads in the mountain regions, where winter conditions are reported. (CM)
