A year ago, former Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, himself an ethnic German from Transylvania, promulgated the Law establishing April 21 as ‘Friendship Day between Romania and the Federal Republic of Germany’. The first anniversary of the Romanian-German Friendship was marked on Tuesday, and the event was attended by Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu, a former ambassador to Berlin, German ambassador Peer Gebauer, German minority MP Ovidiu Ganţ and the president of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, Paul Jurgen Porr.

“Germany and Romania are united by a long-standing friendship and a partnership based on trust. In these times when the world is facing numerous global challenges, the importance of such a friendship becomes even greater,” said Ambassador Gebauer. According to him, challenges such as defending freedom in Europe, maintaining economic capabilities or combating climate change can only be overcome together.

For his part, the head of Romanian diplomacy recalled that the strategic Romanian-German relationship has developed steadily in the 33 years that have passed since the signing of the bilateral Treaty on Friendly Cooperation and Partnership in Europe. A relationship – Emil Hurezeanu stressed – based on a common historical past, on cultural affinities and strong interpersonal connections, as well as on the shared desire to build a better European future together. “The Romania – Germany Friendship Day marks a moment of excellence in the Bucharest-Berlin relationship, highlights the dynamic political-diplomatic and sectoral contacts, respectively the vibrant cooperation at bilateral, EU and NATO levels. The political dialogue and multi-sectoral collaboration, both at the level of the federal government and the German states, demonstrate a genuine and valuable friendship, which has successfully passed the test of time”, Hurezeanu also said.

The Chamber of Deputies also marked the Romanian-German Friendship Day. Deputy Ovidiu Ganţ stressed the importance of relations at all levels between Bucharest and Berlin, in the current international security context. Ovidiu Ganţ:

“In NATO we are very good allies, as evidenced by the collaboration in recent years, as well as Germany’s concrete intentions to invest in the defense industry in Romania. Germany is by far the main investor in the Romanian economy, with over 19 billion euros. In one year alone, between 2023 and 2024, the increase was over 2 billion euros.”

Romanian-German bilateral relations are carried out within the framework defined by the Treaty between Romania and the Federal Republic of Germany on friendly cooperation and partnership in Europe, signed in Bucharest on April 21, 1992. On February 20 this year, Romania celebrated 145 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations with Germany. (MI)
