CSM Bucharest missed the opportunity to qualify to the Final Four of the women’s Champions League in handball, after sustaining a 26-22 defeat to the Danish side Team Esbjerg on Sunday away from home, in the second leg of the quarterfinals. The Romanian champions had won in the first round 30-29, so the team’s journey this season ends, along with the international career of Cristina Neagu, who announced her withdrawal from professional competitions at the end of the season. For CSM Bucharest, the top scorers were Crina Pintea, with 6 goals, and Elizabeth Omoregie, with 5 goals.

Romanian tennis player Irina Bara lost, on Sunday, the final of the ITF tournament in the American city of Charlottesville, Virginia, with total prizes standing at 100 thousand dollars. Bara was defeated by the top seed, the 17-year-old American player Iva Jovic, 6-0, 6-1.

Romanian athletes failed to grab medals at the European Judo Championships in Podgorica, Montenegro. The Romanian delegation consisted of five athletes, three in the men’s competition and two in women’s events. The best results were grabbed by Alexandru Matei in the 60-kg category, and by Cuban-born Amanda Zuaznabar-Torres in the 63-kg category, who reached the round of 16.

The European Youth Fencing Championships, addressing athletes under 23 years old, hosted by the Estonian capital, Tallinn, also ended without medals for Romania. The best ranked was the women’s sabre team, made up of Ilinca Pantiş, Adriana Maria Geatara, Andreea Şerbănoiu and Alexandra Mitruş, which ranked 4th.

Over the weekend, matches counting towards the Romanian Football Super League were played in the group phase. In Group 2, on Friday, in Clinceni, Unirea Slobozia drew 1-1 against Poli Iaşi. Then, in Sfântu Gheorghe, Oţelul Galaţi defeated Sepsi Sfântu Gheroghe 3-0. On Saturday, in Sibiu, FC Hermannstadt defeated UTA 3-0, and on Sunday, FC Botoşani won away from home against Gloria Buzău 2-0. The last match in Group 2 is scheduled for Monday, when Petrolul Ploieşti will take on Farul Constanţa.

In Group 1, on Saturday, Universitatea Cluj won 2-1 against Universitatea Craiova at home. On Sunday, FCSB won 2-1 against Bucharest rivals Rapid on Giuleşti Arena. On Monday, also in Bucharest, the last match of the round: Dinamo will play CFR Cluj. FCSB leads the standings, 6 points ahead of runner-up Universitatea Craiova. (VP)
