Romania is these days being faced with a lot of atmospheric instability, resulting in torrential rain, thunderstorms and strong winds hitting 40 to 50 km per hour. According to the national meteorological service, precipitation may exceed 20 to 40 litres per square metre, and storms and hail storms are forecast. Hydrologists have issued a yellow code warning for unstable weather, with the exception of the north, west and the coastline of country. Torrential rain, thunderstorms and strong wind were reported on Tuesday night across most of the country, with the amount of precipitation hitting 50 litres per square metre in places.

Dolj county, in the south, was one of the worst hit counties, where an orange code warning was issued for hail storms, rain showers, thunderstorms and gusts of wind. Trees fell on cars, roofs were torn and homes were flooded. The fire service intervened in emergency situations. In the neighbouring county of Mehedinţi, in the south-west, an orange code was issued warning of intense meteorological phenomena. Hail destroyed house roofs and car windows were broken. Hundreds of hectares of crops were damaged.

Yellow codes for atmospheric instability were also issued on Tuesday in counties in the centre and north-west of Romania. Many roads were affected by rain and road travel was difficult. Sections of national roads were blocked by mud in the wake of torrential rain.

Unstable weather is also expected in the coming days, with rain and storm forecast especially in the south and south-east, and locally in the centre and in the rest of the country. The highs of the day continue to drop. In the capital Bucharest, the weather remains unstable, with rain showers, strong winds and storms expected until Friday. Hail may also be reported, and the highs of the day will drop from 26 degrees Celsius to 20-21 degrees.

What’s for sure is that in recent years, Romania’s climate has changed and it is experiencing violent weather episodes more frequently, with storms and torrential rain. It even had mini-tornadoes, and hail is increasingly frequent in spring. Moreover, the annual temperature average is higher than in the past, owing to an increase in the number of positive extremes and a drop in the number of negative extremes.
