Romania’s interim president presents activity report

The stability of the country, the organization of presidential elections, foreign and defense policy were among the priorities of the mandate of Romania’s interim president Ilie Bolojan.

Romania’s interim president, Ilie Bolojan, presented an activity report for his 100 days in office. He said that his main concern as head of state was to ensure stability and the unfolding of the presidential elections. “I think the elections unfolded smoothly, in a context of political debates, freedom and normality and Romanians expressed their point of view”, said Ilie Bolojan, who voiced appreciation at the turnout rate and thanked those who were involved in staging the elections. Another priority was ensuring internal stability against the background of a large budget deficit, Bolojan pointed out. He also said that he took over the mandate at a time of domestic difficulties and turbulent international context, marked by the war in Ukraine and the inconstant dialogue between the United States and the European Union.

 

On the other hand, two other important areas that the interim president had in mind were foreign policy and defense. Ilie Bolojan: “One pillar was our EU membership, which for us means conditions for prosperity, values, means European funds and development. The second pillar was our NATO membership and the relationship with the United States (…) So strengthening ties with the United States and the strategic partnership was the second important pillar”.

 

Ilie Bolojan specified that important discussions related to the field of defense were held during these months, aimed at consolidating NATO’s Eastern Flank, strengthening the national defense industry, its integration into the value chains of the European military industry. Accessing European funds was also an important topic. Bolojan added that Romania had clear and constant positions regarding the war in Ukraine, and Bucharest supported a just peace and respect for international law. He pointed out that, as far as the Republic of Moldova is concerned, he has constantly supported the partnership with this country, a sister to Romania, and has done everything possible to strengthen collaborative relations, from all points of view. “Also, Romania’s stand within the EU and the European Council were predictable, convergent with the Romanian Government and this way I believe that I have contributed, in this short period, to strengthening the image of a state and country that one can rely on, a predictable and safe country,” Ilie Bolojan also said.
