SRI Romania’s president Nicusor Dan on Wednesday underlined the need for having a new director of the Romanian Intelligence Services (SRI). Dan also said that most likely the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) also needs a director. President Dan has also announced he will be assessing the activity of the director of the Guard and Protection Service, Lucian Pahonţu. “I have met him; he is the man who has attributions in terms of my personal security, of this institution and of course we have to collaborate”, the Head of the Romanian State told a news conference. In another development, he announced the King of Spain, Felipe 6th will be visiting Romania on June 10. President Nicusor Dan also said he would be visiting the neighboring ex-soviet, Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova on June 10. He also announced he would be attending the NATO Summit in the Hague over June 24 and 26 and the European Council in Brussels on June 27.

X-RAY The European Commission is going to release an economic X-ray of all the EU members on Wednesday according to which Romania is the country that got the highest budget deficit last year. According to official sources, the European Commission will be again criticizing Romania not only for the biggest deficit in the bloc in 2024, but also for its failure to take the right measures to curb it. The X-ray seems to confirm the prerequisite of an 8.6% budget deficit this year, whereas the 7% target seems even more difficult to achieve. In spite of this data, the European Commission will not be recommending further fund cuts to the Council, but will only issue a series of recommendations Bucharest must be taking into account to meet the target. In parallel, the Commission will be waiting for the Romanian government’s fiscal measures aimed at curbing the deficit, a plan, which Romania was supposed to forward by May this year.
VIENNA Romania’s Under-21 football side will be up against Georgia in a friendly in Austria on Wednesday. Both sides have qualified for the European Championship in Slovakia. DRAFT Liberals have tabled a bill in support of the victims of domestic violence. Under the draft, applications for divorce and partitions are exempted from the payment of judicial stamp duty. According to the initiator of the aforementioned draft, the PNL MP Alina Gorghiu, the measure is aimed at supporting the victims of domestic violence to overcome their trauma and regain their lives.
