The 2025 edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), which turned the Transylvanian city, for a few days, into the world’s cultural capital, ended on Sunday, when the streets were animated, for the last time in this edition, by parades, acrobats, dancers and fire shows. On the same day, Damian Drăghici’s concert in the Main Square was followed by a multimedia show with drones, lights and music.
Almost 850 events were held during the ten days of the Festival, in which 5,000 artists from over 80 countries took part. This year’s theme – THANK YOU – represented, according to the organizers, the connection between generosity, joy, the power to give, emotion and the relationship between artists and the public, mediated by all those who contribute to supporting this miraculous process.
The president of the festival, Constantin Chiriac: “With all the great trials that have occurred over time, the joy of meetings is important and especially the opportunity of giving birth to other future meetings that can become a platform, to enrich, to gather other friends, other people and at the same time to be able to give this certainty of the fact that not only it is, but it will be an important continuity for this community (…) a get together in the name of diversity, spectacular quality, but above all human quality”.
This year, seven new stars were added to the city’s Walk of Fame. Among the personalities who received it were the famous American actors Kathleen Turner and Bill Murray, as well as, posthumously, the Romanian-French playwright Eugen Ionescu, master of the theater of the absurd. Kathleen Turner, actress and director, nominated for an Oscar, confessed that she was impressed by what she found in Sibiu and announced that she intends to return to the Theater Festival in 2026. “I think that many times we feel quite isolated. And what I discovered here, in Sibiu, within this festival, is an amazing variety of imagination, of form, of content,” the actress said. And the legendary comedian Bill Murray, one of the most appreciated artists in US, nominated for an Oscar, thanked the people of Sibiu for the way they received him and for the star that was dedicated to him on the Walk of Fame. “I was surprised by this whole event. I didn’t know that people would be stepping on my name for the rest of my life,” said the great actor, with his well known hum our. On Sunday, the last day of the Festival, Bill Murray performed on the stage of the State Philharmonic, in the show “New Worlds”. (EE)
