Tax evasion remains a major weakness, which affects the state budget, weakens the institutions’ capacity to provide high-quality public services and creates inequity among taxpayers. This was one of the ideas highlighted at the Supreme Defence Council meeting on Monday, the first one chaired by president Nicușor Dan.

As such, a coordinated and firm approach is required of all relevant institutions, so as to identify and bring down tax evasion and fraud networks. The authorities will change the criminal legislation concerning tax evasion, more inspections will be conducted, the digitisation of tax services will be stepped up and all legal instruments will be used to recover the damages caused to the Romanian state.

Another topic discussed during the meeting concerned developments in the illegal and unprovoked war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The situation on site and the progress of negotiations were analysed in respect of their implications for Romania. As a neighboring state, as well as a NATO Ally and a member of the European Union, Romania is directly interested in the security of Ukraine, which has a major impact on both regional security and the security of Europe as a whole.

“Our country supports the efforts of the United States of America to end this armed conflict and condemns the lack of political will towards peace on Moscow’s part and its rejection of a complete, immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Along with the other EU and NATO member states, Romania will continue to support Ukraine in its struggle to defend its sovereignty,” an official statement reads.

The document also states that it is in Bucharest’s best interest for the war to end with a fair and sustainable peace, with sound guarantees that would deter new aggression from Russia and contribute to the security of the Euro-Atlantic area, including the Black Sea region.

The Supreme Defence Council members also mentioned that peace negotiations cannot take place without Ukraine and the European Union, and a stable peace must firmly exclude any Russian attempt to re-divide Europe into spheres of influence.

The Council also analysed and approved the Romanian armed forces that can be made available for participation in missions and operations abroad in 2026 and, on the other hand, approved the 2024 report of the National Cyber Security Directorate, in the context in which last year the general level of cyber threat in Romania was high.

As for the future of the Praid salt mine, flooded last month, two scenarios have been assessed: one focused on restoring the old mine and another one establishing a new mine for tourists and a new production mine. (AMP)
