Sports Update

In Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, and in Osijek, Croatia, in the European Youth Olympic Festival competitions, Romania has already won several medals.

The Romanian athletes won their first medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival, the summer edition, which is taking place in Skopje, North Macedonia, and Osijek, Croatia. Athlete Ana Maria Dogan won the bronze medal in the long jump, with a personal record – 6 meters and 9 centimeters. Two other bronze medals were won in the judo competition, by Denisa Șerban, in the 44 kilogram category, and by Alin Șorici, in the 55 kilogram category. Gymnast Alexia Blănaru also won bronze in the individual all-around event. She also managed to qualify in three apparatus finals, namely in the vault, with the second mark, on the beam with the third mark, and on the floor with the fifth mark. The first medal won by the Romanian swimmers was silver won by Cezar Stoica, in the 200-meter individual medley.

 

At the World Fencing Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Romanian fencer Bianca Benea left the individual competition after the first round of the main draw. She was defeated by Estonian athlete Irina Embrich, last year’s European champion in the individual competition, former European, world and Olympic team champion, an athlete aged 45. Thursday will see the men’s individual sabre competition and the women’s foil competition, with Romanian athletes on the draws.

 

The World Swimming Championships continue in Singapore. These days, Romania is represented in the diving and high jump events, as well as in several swimming events. In diving, Angelica Muscalu will compete in the 10-meter platform, and Alexandru Avasiloae, in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard. Constantin Popovici and Cătălin Preda represent Romania in the high jump. In swimming, world and Olympic champion David Popovici will take the start in the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle, and Denis Popescu, in the 50 and 100-meter backstroke, as well as in the 50 and 100-meter butterfly.

 

The Romanian women’s basketball team has found out its opponents in the qualifying group for the 2027 European Championship, scheduled in Belgium, Finland, Sweden and Lithuania. According to the drawing of lots that took place on Wednesday, the Romanian basketball players will be in the same group with Slovakia, Poland and Cyprus. (LS)
