KYIV Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine had agreed to join efforts and fight misinformation together in the context of the ‘massive attacks’ coming from the Russian Federation, the head of the Romanian diplomacy, Oana Ţoiu, said in Cernauti on Friday. She attended the third trilateral meeting Ukraine-Romania-The Republic of Moldova and underlined that Bucharest was the target of misinformation in the period of the latest presidential election. The ministers tackled several topics such as joint threats at the Black and Baltic seas, which could be combated only through tight cooperation. According to a communiqué by the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest, the meeting highlighted the strategic relevance of carrying on and deepening trilateral coordination in the context of the latest security developments. During the talks, Oana Ţoiu reiterated Romania’s firm commitment to carrying on its support for the two neigbouring countries. She highlighted the need for ensuring a durable just and inclusive peace in Ukraine with regional effects. Jointly with her Ukrainian and Moldovan counterparts, Andrii Sybiha and Mihai Popsoi, respectively, the Romanian official hailed the tests over a new rail route linking Kyiv, Chisinau and Bucharest. Also high on the talks agenda were the priorities related to the opening of new border checkpoints and the modernization and streamlining of the existent capabilities.
MEETING Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump would be meeting in a couple of days, the Kremlin announced on Thursday after the White House had announced that a meeting between the two high officials could become possible next week. The ten-days ultimatum Trump set for his Russian counterpart to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine expired on Friday. In the event of a negative answer, Washington says it will resort to a series of sanctions to prevent third countries from making trade with Russia. The Russian President hasn’t met an American counterpart since June 2021, when he held talks with Joe Biden in Geneva.
FOOTBALL Romania’s football champion, FCSB, defeated Kosovo’s FC Drita, 3-2, on Thursday evening, on the National Arena in Bucharest, in the first leg of the third preliminary round of the Europa League. Also on Thursday, Romania’s vice-champion, CFR Cluj, was defeated at home by Sporting Braga of Portugal 2-1, in the same competition. In the preliminary round of the Conference League, Universitatea Craiova outclassed the Slovakian team Spartak Trnava 3-nil. The decisive matches for qualification will be played next week, with all three Romanian teams set to play away.
FESTIVALS Romania’s most famous music festival, UNTOLD, has kicked off in Cluj-Napoca, in the northwest of Romania, bringing over 250 international artists and hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world. Post Malone, Metro Boomin, Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Tiesto, Don Diablo and many others will take to the main stage, one of the largest structures of its kind in Romania. On the other hand, in Sibiu (center), the 19th edition of the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) is taking place from August 7-10.
