The Romanian women’s volleyball side qualified for the 2026 European Championship. They ranked second in qualifying Group G after defeating Croatia on Wednesday. The latter beat Kosovo on Saturday and won the group. According to the competition’s regulation, the group winners and the best five teams ranked second in the group will advance to the next stage. The European Championship, which brings together 24 teams, will take place between August 21st and September 6th 2026 and will be co-hosted by Turkey, Azerbaijan, Czechia and Sweden.
Romania won two medals at the European Athletics Under 20 Championships held in Tampere, in Finland. Daria Vrînceanu won the silver in the triple jump and Ștefania Uță won the gold in the 400 m hurdles. The latter’s time, 55.55 seconds, set a new competition record as the best European time in this age category, as well as the athlete’s own personal best.
Matches counting towards the fifth leg of the Romanian Football Superleague were held at the weekend. On Friday, Dinamo defeated Metaloglobus 1-nil in Clinceni. On Saturday, UTA Arad defeated Farul Constanţa 2-1 at home, while Universitatea Cluj drew against Petrolul Ploieşti 1-all, also at home. On Sunday, Universitatea Craiova defeated Hermannstadt at home 1-nil, while Unirea Slobozia defeated FCSB in Bucharest, 1-nil. Two more matches are held on Monday: FC Botoşani vs. FC Argeş and Oţelul Galaţi vs. Rapid Buchatest. The match between Csikszereda and CFR Cluj has been postponed for October 16th. Universitatea Craiova currently top the ranking with 13 points, followed by UTA, with 11.
This week is also decisive for the Romanian teams playing in the European competitions, namely FCSB, CFR Cluj and Universitatea Craiova. On Thursday, FCSB and CFR Cluj are playing the second leg of their third Europa League qualifying match, while Universitatea Craiova are playing the return leg of the third round qualifying match for the Conference League.
