8 athletes from Romania are participating in the World Kayak-canoe Championships that kicked off in Milan on Wednesday. In the competition’s first day, Cătălin Chirilă managed to qualify for the semis of the 500 and 1000 meter single races.
Chirila was a former world champion in the five hundred meter race in Duisburg, Germany two years ago and winner of the world title in Dartmouth, Canada in 2022. Worth noting is that Romania’s canoe four, made up of Georgel Bărăgău, Ioan Mihai Rotundu, Andrei Roşioru and Braulio Flores-Mateescu also managed to qualify for the semis on Wednesday.
The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea has qualified for the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, a competition with total prizes of 275 thousand dollars. On Wednesday, the Romanian clinched a two-set win 6-1, 6-1 against Jil Teichmann of Switzerland. The 35 year-old Romanian athlete, currently ranking 112th in the WTA standings has thus made another step forward in an attempt to join the world’s top 100 players. Cîrstea and Teichmann, the last month’s finalist of the WTA 250 tournament in Iaşi, northern Romania, are now equal in terms of head-to-head matches. In Iaşi, Teichmann won the semifinals match against Sorana, 6-4, 6-3.
The Romanian swimmer Daria Silişteanu won silver in the 100 meter backstroke event of the World Junior Championship in Otopeni, near Bucharest. The gold medal went to US swimmer Charlotte Crush, who came first in 59 seconds and 52 hundredths. The runner-up Silişteanu came only half a second after the winner. Madison Kryger of Canada became the bronze medalist. The other Romanian in the finals, Claudia Prisecariu, went sixth. The World Junior Swimming Championship will end on August 24. Romania has a record high number of athletes in the aforementioned competition, 18.
