VISIT The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is to arrive in Romania on Monday and she will be having talks in Constanta with the country’s President Nicusor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, the presidential administration has announced. According to the same sources, the talks will be focusing on strengthening the EU-NATO cooperation as well as aspects related to the prevention, detection and deterring maritime and hybrid threats. The head of the Community Executive is going to start a tour on Friday, which will also take her to Latvia, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Romania. According to the Representation of the European Commission in Romania, her visits are expected to highlight the EU support for member states currently facing challenges because they have common borders with Russia and Belarus. ATTACK The Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) condemns Russia’s major attack against Kyiv, which on Wednesday caused numerous casualties among civilians and significant material damage, including to the buildings housing the EU delegation and British Council. ‘This is another blatant piece of evidence of Russia’s complete disdain for the international peace efforts. These attacks are adding to the long list of war crimes Russia committed against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people’ a Facebook post of the Ministry reads. According to the ministry, all efforts must be made so that the perpetrators may be held accountable. MAE has reiterated Romania’s full solidarity with Ukraine and its legitimate fight for defending its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. At least 14 people, three children included, have been killed in one of the most serious Russian attacks against Ukraine.

F-16 Three F-16 Fighting Falcons, Romania purchased from the Kingdom of Norway on Thursday touched down at an air base in Romania, the Ministry of National Defence has announced. The warplanes are joining those already part of Romania’s Air Forces and will contribute to strengthening the country’s air defence capability, says a communiqué the Ministry of Defence released to AGERPRES news agency. The new batch of war planes is part of a contract the Romanian government has concluded with the Norwegian government on the purchase of 32 F-16 jet fighters together with the initial logistical support and a complementary package of goods and services provided by the US government. 21 F-16 fighter aircraft have been delivered so far.
