Romanian President Nicușor Dan participated, on Sunday, in the Republic of Moldova, in the events dedicated to Romanian Language Day. Together with President Maia Sandu, he opened the festive event, which brought together, in Chișinău, over 2,000 participants. The two heads of state then went to Strășeni, a city in the center of the Republic of Moldova, where they laid flowers at the bust of the national poet Mihai Eminescu and took part in the concert dedicated to the Romanian Language. In their messages, the two leaders highlighted the historical, identity and language ties between the two banks of Prut River. Nicuşor Dan voiced appreciation at Chisinau’s European path, despite Russian pressure and interference in democratic processes and attempts to destabilize the state. He also believes that the Republic of Moldova is an example for Europe and the whole world for the way it defends democracy.

“Romanian Language Day is a special day. It is a day that makes us responsible,” the Romanian head of state said. According to him, the Romanian language is, beyond being an identity, a responsibility for each of us. At the same time, he welcomed the fight of the Bessarabian Romanians for the Romanian language and for preserving the national identity. Nicuşor Dan: “The Moldovans’ fight for the Romanian language has been exemplary, in harsh conditions and is an example of courage and dignity. I want to congratulate you on how seriously you take European integration. It is an example that I hear at all international meetings  – how serious Moldova is on advancing on its Western path. We all know what the pressures are, with interferences contrary to any international order”.

The Romanian language unites us and is the strongest bridge between the two banks of Prut River, said in turn President Maia Sandu, who added that the Romanian language must be honored and respected every day. Maia Sandu: “Here people fight every day for democracy, for freedom and for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova”.

On the occasion of the Romanian Language Day, the European Union delegation in Chisinau conveyed a message highlighting the importance of the Romanian language as a symbol of identity and connection with cultural roots. “Happy anniversary to those who carry the Romanian language with them everywhere in the world!”, reads the message of the EU delegation.

Romanian Language Day is marked every year on August 31 in the Republic of Moldova and Romania, celebrating not only the mother tongue, but also the spiritual and cultural unity among Romanian speakers around the world. Since 1990, Romanian Language Day has been marked every year in the Republic of Moldova, and since 2013 – also in Romania. (EE)
