GOVERNMENT – Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has told his coalition partners that if the agreements reached when forming the Government are not respected, it will be difficult for him to do his job as a prime minister. At the Cotroceni Palace, the presidential headquarters, talks are under way between Nicuşor Dan and the leaders of the parties forming the ruling coalition. On Monday, the UDMR leader, Kelemen Hunor, said that the meeting is a normal one for the beginning of the parliamentary session. Asked if it was related to disagreements in the ruling coalition regarding the local administration reform project, which has been postponed, he said that maintaining the dialogue is natural, taking into account the role of the country’s president as a mediator.

 

COMISSION – Romania has shown impressive resilience of its democracy, the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, said Monday, during a meeting with President Nicuşor Dan, at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Military Base in Constanta County (southeastern Romania). Being on a tour that aimed to emphasize the EU’s support for member states facing challenges due to their geographical proximity to Russia or Belarus, the European leader talked about the security situation and the need to increase investments in defense. European solidarity is important in this complicated period, with pressures coming from the Russian Federation, Romanian President Nicuşor Dan said in turn.

 

RO ALERT – Romania’s General Inspectorate for Emergencies issued a new RO-ALERT message on the night of Monday to Tuesday, a for the northern area of Tulcea County (southeast), in the context of the war in the neighboring Ukraine, invaded by the Russian troops. The population was warned about the possibility of objects falling from the airspace and was urged to adopt protective measures, the duration of the air alert being about 90 minutes.

 

ENESCU FESTIVAL – The French orchestra Les Siecles (The Centuries) is invited to perform this evening at the Romanian Athenaeum, as part of the “George Enescu” International Festival. Made up of musicians of the new generation, it offers a fresh perspective on several centuries of musical creation. The concert of the Zurich orchestra at Sala Palatului (The Palace Hall), the performance, at the National Theatre in Bucharest, of the Sibiu Ballet Theater with a show by the Romanian choreographer Gigi Căciuleanu, on music by Dan Dediu, are also scheduled for today. Until September 21, over 80 music ensembles from 28 countries will perform as part of the festival, co-produced by Radio Romania.

 

FOOTBALL – The coach of the Romanian national football squad, Mircea Lucescu, announced the 26 lineup for this month’s matches against the national teams of Canada and Cyprus. The squad called up for the two meetings includes 13 players who play for clubs abroad and another 13 footballers from the first domestic league. Romania plays, on Friday, September 5, in Bucharest, a friendly match with Canada, and on Tuesday, on the 9th, away, an official match with Cyprus, in Group H of the preliminaries of next year’s World Cup. The leader of the group is Bosnia, with 9 points, followed by Austria and Romania – 6 each, Cyprus – 3 and San Marino – zero points.

 

TENNIS – The Romanian-Ukrainian pair Gabriela Ruse/Marta Kostiuk was defeated by the Russian-Belgian couple Veronika Kudermetova/Elise Mertens, 6-4, 6-1, in New York, in the round of 16 of the women’s doubles event of the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year. Ruse and Kostiuk were defeated after one hour and 19 minutes. Last year, the two stopped in the second round. (EE)
