MOTIONS The four censure motions the populist opposition submitted to Parliament against the pro-European coalition government were rejected through vote on Sunday. During a marathon session, the Chamber of Deputies and Senate held debates upon the aforementioned motions against the bills for which the Executive had assumed responsibility and which focused on healthcare, tax policies and on the process of reshuffling state companies. The four drafts as well as that on the pensions of the magistrates are considered endorsed. In order to be implemented, they must be approved by the Constitutional Court, where they are also to be contested by the Party for the Union of the Romanians, AUR.

SCHOOL Roughly 3 million preschoolers and students will today start a new school year in Romania. Many education units have announced they will not stage the traditional ceremonies marking the beginning of a new school year, this being a form of protest against the austerity measures endorsed by the government aimed at curbing Romania’s budget deficit. Teachers are contesting the increased number of working hours and students in classrooms, the pay cuts and school mergers. 30 thousand teachers are expected to attend a meeting in front of the government building and a march to the presidential palace. Students have announced their solidarity with the teachers.

Romania has three representatives in top 100. Jaqueline Cristian is ranking 43rd, the best position in her career so far.
