Handball is one of the sports in which Romania is still a force to be reckoned with internationally. The Romanian men’s champions Dinamo Bucharest are again playing in the Champions League this year, and women’s clubs are doing even better. Two teams are representing the country in the major European competition, namely CSM Bucharest and Gloria Bistrița, and three clubs are vying in the second tier competition, the European League, namely Corona Brașov, Rapid Bucharest and Minaur Baia Mare. Moreover, the women’s National League is a true magnet for the world’s top players. Today we will look at the start of the international season in women’s handball and the results and prospects of the Romanian clubs.

The Champions League group stage got under way in the first weekend in September. Romania is represented by Gloria Bistrița in Group A and by CSM Bucharest in Group B. Gloria won both of their two matches played so far: 29 to 26 at home against the Norwegian side Stavanger, and 34 to 33 away against the Hungarian side Debrecen. On Sunday, on the 28th September, Gloria will be facing the French side Metz at home. Romanian champions CSM Bucharest got off to a bad start, as they narrowly lost 27 to 28 to the Danish side Ikast, away from home. They went on to win their next match at home against the Hungarian side Ferencváros, 31-28 and will next be playing Brest Bretagne in France on Saturday, 27th September.

In the EHF European League, the matches counting for the second qualifying round will be held at the end of the month. Rapid Bucharest will play the Austrian side Hypo Niederösterreich, first away on 27th September. The third qualifying round will be played on the 8th and 9th November, when Minaur Baia Mare will also enter the competition. Romanian vice-champions Corona Brașov are among the four clubs going straight to group stage, alongside Thüringer from Germany, Nykøbing Falster from Denmark and Sola, from Norway. Group matches will get under way in January 2026.
