BILL The draft of the first budget adjustment this year, which has a deficit target of 8.4% of the GDP, has been posted on the webpage of the Finance Ministry in Bucharest for public debates – field minister, Alexandru Nazare has announced. According to him the new money allotment is going to cover all the essential needs until the end of the year, such as pensions, salaries and social assistance. According to some sources, the largest amount will be earmarked to the Ministry of Finances for the payment of the loans contracted by Romania and the related interests. Transports will also get funds for covering investment and infrastructure works, and so will the ministries of Development for investment carried out through various national programmes, the Ministry of Labour for social assistance and that of Energy to make payments to energy suppliers. The new bill is said to also include a 10% fund cut for political parties. However, the aforementioned adjustment formula isn’t definitive as it has triggered discontent among ministers and further talks on the issue among the ruling coalition are expected to resume early next week. The final form of the adjustment is to be approved in a special government sitting.
MEDALS Romania has won more medals at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, China. The Romanian four made up of Ancuţa Bodnar, Geanina Juncănariu, Adriana Adam and Amalia Bereş became silver medalist in Shanghai. They came very close to the winner US boat in a race where New Zealand came in third. The men’s four from Romania, with Ştefan Berariu, Sergiu Bejan, Andrei Mândrilă and Ciprian Tudosă also came second in their race won by Britain with the boat of the Netherlands in the third position. We recall that Romania’s female and male doubles won gold and silver in Shanghai on Thursday. 12 crews are representing Romania in the present edition of the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai due over September 21-28.
EU The European Union on Thursday said the Republic of Moldova is facing an unprecedented disinformation campaign led by Russia before the Parliamentary election on September 28. “It’s not the first time that Russia is employing textbook manipulation and disinformation tactics, but they are resorting to much more”, says the EU Foreign Affairs Spokeswoman Anitta Hipper. The vote on Sunday is considered crucial for the future of the ex-soviet republic with a majority Romanian-speaking population of 2.5 million, which proclaimed its independence in 1991. According to the polls, the PAS, the pro-EU party of incumbent President Maia Sandu, that has been ruling the country since 2021, has a slight advantage, but the pro-Russia parties are very close. The Moldovan citizens in Romania can cast their ballots on Sunday in the 23 polling stations across the country.
PROTESTS Disgruntled with the government’s latest austerity measures, teachers in Romania are carrying on the series of protests they kicked off in summer. They are protesting the government’s decision to raise the number of their working hours, to merge some schools as well as the lower number of scholarships. According to them, these measures will have effects over the entire educational system. The National Alliance of Student Organisations in Romania has announced its intention to kick off a series of protests on Monday, the beginning of the university year in Romania, in front of the government building in Bucharest and in other university centers around the country.
