Victory for the pro-EU party in the Republic of Moldova

The ruling pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), founded by President Maia Sandu, has won Sunday's parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova.

UPDATE: According to partial returns, after the count of 99.91% of the votes, PAS got 50.16% of the votes, followed by  the pro-Russian “Patriotic Bloc”  with 24.19%, the “Alternative” Electoral Bloc, led by the Mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, with 7.97%, “Our Party” of Renato Usatîi with 6.20% , and “Democracy at Home”  Party  led by Vasile Costiuc, with 5.62%.

According to partial returns, after the count of 99.5% of the votes, PAS got over half of the votes cast in the elections and will secure an absolute majority in Parliament.

Running second is the “Patriotic Bloc”, made up of pro-Russian parties, with only 24.3% of the votes, followed by the “Alternative” Electoral Bloc, led by the Mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, who is banned from traveling to Romania and the European Union. Other parties that have won seats in the Moldovan Parliament are “Our Party”, led by the controversial mayor of Balti, Renato Usatîi, and the “Democracy at Home” Party, considered the surprise of the elections and propelled into Parliament following a campaign on TikTok.

The pro-Europeans’ victory comes at the end of a campaign during which the authorities and the press denounced massive interference from the Russian Federation, in an attempt to influence the outcome of the vote.

The Moldovan citizens who went to the polls opened in Romania on Sunday, mostly young people, have said they want a better future for their country. They hope that, after the elections, the Republic of Moldova will irreversibly move towards Europe.

In Bucharest, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan sent a message of congratulation to the Moldovan voters for their mobilization in the parliamentary elections and to the authorities in Chisinau for the exemplary way in which they organized the election, reiterating that the Republic of Moldova belongs in the great European family.

Presidential advisor Radu Burnete has also sent a message, showing that Eastern Europe will demonstrate to Russia, despite the war and propaganda, that a historical cycle ended in 1989 and a definitive step forward into the Western space was taken back then.
