Romania has a new world champion in weightlifting: Mihaela Cambei

The World Weightlifting Championships continue in Førde, Norway, with the participation of over 500 athletes from 93 countries. Romania has already obtained a world title, through Mihaela Cambei who, in the 53-kilogram category, won the gold medal in the snatch event and silver medals in the clean and jerk event and in the total event on Friday. In the snatch competition, the Romanian lifted 90 kilograms on her first attempt. She then missed an attempt at 93 kilograms, but mobilized and managed to lift 94 on her third attempt. Her main opponent, North Korean Hyon-gyong Kang, was left with the 93 kilograms lifted on her second attempt, after missing her third, when she wanted to lift 96. However, the Korean athlete prevailed in the snatch final, where she lifted 121 kilograms, 7 more than Mihaela, and won the gold medal in total, with 214 kilograms.

 

In news from football, this weekend saw matches part of the women’s European competitions. On Saturday, in Group A of Champions League, Győr defeated Gloria Bistrița, at home, 33-18. This was the second consecutive defeat for the Transylvanian team, which now has two wins and two losses, ranking 5th in the group standings. Gloria’s top scorer in Hungary was the Japanese Asuka Fujita, with 4 goals. In Group B of Champions League, on Sunday, CSM Bucharest decisively won 34-24 against Podravka Koprivnica of Croatia at home. Trine Østergaard of Denmark was the top scorer for CSM with 8 goals. Like Gloria Bistrița, CSM ranks 5th in the group tables, with two wins and two losses.

 

Let’s move on to football. FCSB won, on Sunday, the highlight match of the Romanian Super League, defeating 1-0 Universitatea Craiova at home. The winner’s goal was scored on minute 39 by Florin Tănase from penalty kick. He also missed a penalty on minute 78, when the Ukrainian goalkeeper of Craiova, Pavlo Isenko, managed to save the kick. Starting minute 58, Craiova played with one man down, after Alexandru Cicâldău was shown a red card for a second yellow booking.

 

The 12th round of the domestic championship started on Friday, when Dinamo Bucharest won 1-0 in Clinceni against Unirea Slobozia. On Saturday, Csikszereda beat Universitatea Cluj 2-1 in Miercurea Ciuc, then Petrolul Ploiești won 1-0 in Pitești against FC Argeș, after which Rapid Bucharest defeated Farul Constanța 3-1 at home. On Sunday, in Cluj, CFR defeated Hermannstadt 2-1. On Monday, Oțelul Galați is playing Metaloglobus Bucharest whereas FC Botoșani will take on UTA Arad. Rapid tops the standings with 25 points, followed by Universitatea Craiova with 24 points and Dinamo Bucahrest with 23 points. (VP)
