The Constitutional Court in Chișinău on Thursday validated the result of the parliamentary election of September 28 in the Republic of Moldova, deemed crucial for consolidating the European future of the ex-Soviet republic. The Court validated the mandates of the 101 deputies elected in the new unicameral Parliament. The decision is final and cannot be appealed, the last step being the publication in the Official Gazette. Thus, five parties will be represented in Parliament. With 55 mandates, the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party, founded by president Maia Sandu, a party that has led the Republic of Moldova for the past four years, will hold the parliamentary majority. The pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc will have 26 seats, and the pro-Russian Alternativa Electoral Bloc has secured 8 mandates. The Our Party, founded by  Renato Usatîi, a controversial politician and businessman with ties to Moscow, will have 6 MPs. Finally, the Democracy Home Party, which was mentioned in the Central Electoral Authority report for violating the law and was directly supported during the election campaign by individuals declared undesirable on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, will also be represented by 6 deputies.

Also on Thursday, the Constitutional Court in Chișinău dismissed the request of a number of electoral competitors to invalidate the vote, arguing that the election was held in compliance with constitutional norms. The president of the Court, Domnica Manole, stated that both the registration process of the competitors and the campaign were held in observance of the legislation in force. Conversely, the Court issued an official address requesting Parliament and the Presidency to develop a clear legislative framework regarding online electoral advertising, given that the Court cannot ignore the conclusions of national and international observers, as well as of the Central Electoral Commission regarding the distribution of political advertising and false information on social media, carried out through networks of fake accounts and amplified with the help of artificial intelligence. According to observers, these actions represented hybrid attacks, carried out by troll farms under the influence of foreign state entities, especially the Russian Federation. The new Parliament in Chișinău is expected to convene in its first session no later than October 28. According to procedure, after the election of the president and vice-presidents and the establishment of parliamentary groups, they will be invited by the president of the Republic to consultations for the designation of the candidate for the position of Prime Minister. The majority Action and Solidarity Party has already announced it will nominate businessman Alexandru Munteanu for this position. The designated Prime Minister will have 15 days to designate the members of his Cabinet, draft a government program and seek Parliament’s vote of confidence. (VP)
