The World Gymnastics Championships, which ended last week proved to be another disappointment for sports lovers in Romania. The Romanian delegation again left with no major performances, a sad period in the history of Romanian gymnastics, which has continued for almost a decade now.

We recall that the last Romanian medals was the silver Marian Dragulescu won in the vault event in Glasgow in 2015, and when Larisa Iordache walked away with bronze from the all round event of the same contest.

Romania was represented only in the female competitions of the prestigious gymnastics event held in Jakarta, Iondonesia. Our delegation was made up of Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, Denisa Golgotă, Anamaria Mihăescu and Ella Crețu. Only Sabrina qualified for the floor and beam events and Denisa in the floor competition. Denisa came close to the finals of the all round event after coming 28th in the qualifiers. Anamaria Mihăescu obtained the best result in the floor contest as she was ranking 34th in the qualifiers. Ella Oprea put up the best performance in the uneven bars where she ranked 31st.

The best Romanian gymnast, Ana Maria Barbosu did not attend the competition for personal reasons. She was European champion in the floor event in Leipzig in May, where she won silver in the beam event and bronze in the uneven bars and individual all round events. This year she has become a student of the Stanford University and decided to take a competition break.

In a news conference before the aforementioned event, the president of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, Ioan Suciu, explained the absence of the Romanian male team from the competition in Indonesia. He mentioned several reasons, such as health issues as well as the huge costs of sending a delegation of athletes to such a long’ distance. Another reason invoked was also the lackluster performances recently obtained by our male gymnasts.
