The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, made an official trip to Chişinău on Friday. She told a plenary meeting of the Moldovan Parliament that Brussels would continue to support the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union.

Roberta Metsola said the Republic of Moldova has demonstrated remarkable progress on the path to European integration, finalising the screening process and adopting essential roadmaps for the consolidation of its rule of law. She emphasised that the European Union must respond with the same courage and clarity, but also prepare for an enlargement that will change the way the Union works. The Republic of Moldova, Metsola added, is making decisive progress towards opening accession talks by the end of this year. The President of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu said his country has demonstrated resilience at a difficult time for Europe, maintaining its pro-European course, with citizens reconfirming this direction during the latest elections. President Maia Sandu said the Republic of Moldova is preparing for integration and continues to count on the support of the European Parliament. Maia Sandu:

“Today, Moldova is modernising, consolidating its institutions, building bridges, roads, power lines to connect us to the European Union, integrating our economy into the European market and preparing the country for accession. The enlargement report published this week confirms that Moldova has made the greatest progress among all candidate countries. We still have a lot of work to do, but we also have a lot of support. The opening of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Chişinău will help us harmonise our national legislation with European legislation. It is an enormous effort, and the support of the European Parliament will make this process clearer and more efficient. We will continue to work with ambition and dedication and we are confident that both sides will maintain a sustained pace. We continue to count on your support, on the support of the European Parliament, in this effort that is considerable for us, for the Republic of Moldova, but vital for the freedom and prosperity of our citizens.”

In a press conference held together with Maia Sandu, Roberta Metsola acknowledged that the Republic of Moldova has made remarkable progress so far in terms of EU accession, but said that more work is needed in terms of reforms relating to the rule of law, the fight against corruption, the working of democratic institutions and the efficient absorption of European funds. Metsola also said that Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and the other EU candidate states will be treated individually. The decoupling of the two countries, Metsola also said, is not a subject of negotiation for Chişinău, but it is clear that when a country meets the conditions, “the decision must be made.”
