Romania's women's basketball team made its debut with a victory in the preliminary rounds of the 2027 European Championship

On Wednesday, in Limassol, Romania’s women’s national basketball team defeated Cyprus 75-62 in their debut in Group C of the first preliminary round of the 2027 European Championship. Ana Vîrjoghe stood out in the team coached by Cătălin Tănase, with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. In the other game in the group, Poland defeated Slovakia 62-55 away. On Saturday, Romania will face Poland away, and on Tuesday they will face Slovakia at home. The top two teams in each group and the three best third-placed teams, i.e. 17 teams in total, will qualify for the second round of the qualifiers.
Moving on to men’s basketball, we note that U-BT Cluj-Napoca defeated the Spanish team BAXI Manresa, with a score of 110-86, in a game played in Turda, counting for EuroCup, Group A. The best players from the Romanian champions were American Trey Woodbury, with 26 points and 4 assists, and Romanian player of American origin Daron Russell, with 23 points, 4 rebounds, and 8 assists. The University is in 4th place in the group, with four wins and three losses, and will play its next game on Tuesday against the Israeli team Hapoel Midtown Jerusalem in Cluj-Napoca.
Two Romanian teams faced each other in Group C of the FIBA Europe Cup men’s basketball competition. CSM CSU Oradea defeated Corona Brașov 87-65 at home, recording their fourth victory in the group. Canadian Kalif Young was the best player for the hosts, with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists. Swiss player Selim Fofana stood out for Brașov, with 17 points and 4 assists. The Turkish team Aliaga Petkimspor and CSM CSU Oradea are tied for first place in the group. The winners of the 10 groups in the competition and the six best second-placed teams qualify for the second phase. In the last round, next Wednesday, Oradea plays at home against Aliaga Petkimspor, and Corona hosts the Cypriot team AEK Larnaca. (MI)
