Drone. A crashed drone was found in Vaslui County (eastern Romania), said defence minister Ionuţ Moşteanu. The drone most likely entered national airspace this morning and appeared on radars in the area of Tulcea and Galați counties, near the Danube. Initial assessments indicate that the drone did not have an explosive charge on board, Ionuţ Moşteanu said. Residents of three Romanian counties this morning received alert text messages warning of the presence of a drone near the border between Romania and Ukraine. No incidents or negative effects were reported on the national territory during the aerial monitoring of the situation by German Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft and F16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. The pilots had received the green light to engage with the aerial target. This is the 13th time an unmanned aerial vehicle entered Romanian airspace without authorisation since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Also, over 40 cases have been recorded of drone parts falling on Romanian territory. In another development, again this morning, a drone crashed in a locality in the Republic of Moldova, which neighbours both Romania and Ukraine. Six such objects crossing Moldova’s airspace without authorization were detected by the Moldovan army’s surveillance systems against the backdrop of a massive Russian attack on Ukrainian ports on the Danube.

Defence. The Country’s National Supreme Council has approved the National Defence Strategy for 2025-2030. According to statement from the President’s office, it is necessary to consolidate Romania’s efforts to strengthen national security at all levels, in order to fulfil the fundamental goal of defence policy, guaranteeing sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. The Romanian state must be prepared to manage the risks of a long-term armed conflict near its borders and at the same time strengthen its national resilience, the statement also reads. The Country’s National Supreme Council also emphasized the need to enhance the army’s combat capacity and step up the rejuvenation of the national defence industry. The National Defence Strategy will be submitted to Parliament for approval on Wednesday.

Deficit. The European Commission is today publishing its economic and budgetary recommendations for each member state.  Brussels sources quoted by Radio Romania’s correspondent indicate that the Commission is expected to freeze the excessive budget deficit procedure opened against Romania. The risk of Romania losing European funds is therefore also frozen. According to the Commission, the fiscal measures taken by the Bucharest government are working and will help reduce the budget deficit to below 3% of GDP by 2031. The Commission will continue to conduct assessments and make recommendations until Romania meets its target. The next evaluation will take place in spring. Romania has the highest budget deficit in the European Union.

Women. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is marked today. The United Nations draws attention to the fact that last year, 50,000 women were murdered, and almost 840 million were victims of physical and psychological aggression. In Romania, since the beginning of this year, over 50 women have been murdered. Between January and October, at the national level, over 12,000 temporary protection orders were issued, of which almost 5,000 were converted into protection orders. Romanian deputies are discussing a draft law that provides for the automatic extension of the temporary protection order pending the court’s decision, increasing the penalties for repeat offences and eliminating the possibility of withdrawing criminal complaints in cases of domestic violence.

Income. Real household incomes per capita in the European Union grew by 22% between 2004 and 2024, with Romania recording the highest rise among all member states, at 134%, according to data published on Tuesday by Eurostat. Other member states with strong increases are Lithuania (95%), Poland (91%) and Malta (90%), while Greece and Italy are the only EU member states that saw a decrease in this respect over the last 20 years, at minus 5% and minus 4%, respectively.

Diplomacy. Romanian foreign minister Oana Ţoiu today had talks with her Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto, emphasising the wish of the Romanian side to maintain an open, pragmatic and constructive approach based on the Strategic Partnership. Romania said it appreciated Hungary’s support for its Schengen entry. Romania’s membership today brings concrete benefits to both countries, both for the business environment and for citizens, with bilateral exchanges growing by 13% following Romania’s accession to the Schengen area. The two ministers also discussed regional security and the prospect of peace negotiations to bring about an end to Russian aggression in Ukraine. Minister Oana Ţoiu highlighted the need for action at European level based on unity and solidarity. She reiterated Romania’s commitment to support the progress of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine on their European course, as well as that of its partners in the Western Balkans, based on the principle of individual merits.
