Romania’s relations with Austria and Hungary

The cooperation between Romania and Austria will be further developed, especially in the economic and energy sectors.

The government of Romania wants affordable electricity for households and companies. To this end, Bucharest is working to increase the national energy output by completing works at power plants under construction, increasing storage capacity, energy efficiency projects and investments in networks that ensure better connectivity.

At the same time, projects must be accelerated that improve interconnection between the countries in the region, so as to enable Romania to export energy when it has a surplus, and to get cheaper energy from Western and Central Europe more easily in the evening hours, when the country imports energy.

On Wednesday in Budapest, the prime ministers of Romania and Hungary, Ilie Bolojan and Viktor Orban, had ‘a pragmatic discussion (…) on how we should work together to strengthen the electricity interconnection between Romania and Hungary and, more broadly, between the countries in our region, including Austria’.

Subsequently, the Romanian official left for Vienna, on a visit to Austria at the invitation of Chancellor Christian Stocker. Official talks and meetings with members of the business community were held, with the goal of extending bilateral cooperation in the economy, with a potential for growing investments in both markets. Special attention was paid to cooperation in the energy sector.

The talks also addressed Austria’s support for Romania’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

PM Ilie Bolojan: “For Romania, Austria is one of the most important partners in Europe, both due to the investments of Austrian companies in Romania, the jobs created, but also our long-standing cooperation and respect.”

The relations between Romania and Austria have a very long and important history in economic and cultural terms. There have been difficult stages, but they have been overcome and we must look to the future, Chancellor Christian Stocker pointed out in his turn. He took part, jointly with Ilie Bolojan, in a reception occasioned by the recent National Day of Romania, an opportunity for both to commend the Romanian community for the way it has integrated into the labour market and the Austrian society.

Ilie Bolojan: “I must thank the Romanian community in Austria for everything they do here, from caring for the elderly or working in construction, to the most highly qualified professions. All of you good citizens here honour us and I thank you for this. Thanks are also in place to the Austrian people, the Austrian government, the authorities here for the way they have received the Romanian community and for the support they are giving for its integration.”

“The Romanians in Austria do not contribute, but enrich the Austrian society with everything they do,” Chancellor Christian Stocker added. (AMP)
