UKRAINE – The Romanian acting Minister of National Defense in Bucharest, Radu Miruţă, participated on Tuesday in an online meeting of the Contact Group for Ukraine. The discussions focused on the developments in the security situation generated by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and on the ways to consolidate international support for this country, according to a press release from the Defense Ministry. The members of the Group reconfirmed their firm commitment to support Kyiv on multiple levels, including through contributions to the joint initiatives of NATO and EU organizations and through bilateral assistance and support measures. “Romania’s participation in the Contact Group for Ukraine reflects our country’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people and its commitment to defending democratic values and regional stability,” the Ministry reports.

PRIZE – The European Parliament hosted the Sakharov Prize awards ceremony in Strasbourg on Tuesday, through which the European Parliament rewards freedom of thought. This year’s laureates are a journalist from Georgia and one from Belarus, but neither of them could attend, as they are in prison in their countries. The Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought is named after the Russian physicist and dissident Andrei Sakharov and is the EU’s highest human rights award. It has been awarded since 1988, and over time, has been presented to several journalists and organizations fighting for press freedom, including the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders and the Belarusian Journalists Association.

THREAT – Even if peace is achieved in Ukraine, Russia will remain a permanent threat, Romanian President Nicușor Dan said on Tuesday in Helsinki, at a joint press conference with EU leaders on the Eastern Flank. He said the purpose of the summit in Finland was to render operational NATO and EU programs concerning the region, and the meeting will be followed by technical meetings at ministerial level. “Our efforts within the EU must be complementary to those within NATO,” the Romanian president said, stressing that there must be a balance between the northern and southern parts of the region, recalling that Romania has offered to host a security hub on the Black Sea. After Finland, President Dan will visit the United Kingdom, the Presidential Administration informs. On Tuesday evening, a meeting was scheduled with representatives of the Romanian community in the UK, and on Wednesday he will meet with Romanian representatives of the business environment in the United Kingdom and with representatives of British companies.

REVOLUTION – In Timişoara, in western Romania, marches began on Tuesday in memory of the victims of the 1989 anti-communist Revolution and in honor of those who fought for freedom 36 years ago. For five days, events will take place to commemorate the victims. The Revolution that began in the city, led to the fall of the communist regime. Local and county councilors convene in festive meetings, to which representatives of the revolutionary associations are also invited. Exhibitions, book launches, concerts and the screening of a film on this topic have been scheduled at the Opera House.

CORRUPTION – Former Romanian Minister of Transport, Alexandru-Răzvan Cuc, was detained on Tuesday by prosecutors of the National Anticorruption Directorate, in a case investigating bribery and complicity in bribery. He had been brought to the DNA for questioning after searches at his residence. According to judicial sources cited by AGERPRES, the value of the bribe in this case would be 6% of a framework contract of 23 million lei (4.6 million euros). The investigation would target an illegal transaction: a contract that should have been awarded illegally, and in exchange for this favor, the former PSD Minister of Transport would have tried to give a bribe worth over 250,000 euros.
