Romanian water polo players reached their goal at the European Championships in Serbia, ranking among the top eight teams of the competition and qualifying for the World Championships.

The Romanian water polo team ranked 8th at the European Championships that ended on Sunday in Belgrade. The Romanians thus qualified for the next edition of the World Championships. Serbia won the European title after defeating Hungary 10-7 in the final.
The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, entered its second week. There is no player from Romania left in the competition. In the singles, Gabriela Ruse was eliminated in the round of 16 by Russian Mirra Andreeva, world number 8 (6-3, 6-4). For qualifying among the best 32 players of the tournament, the Romanian received 327,750 Australian dollars and 130 WTA points.
In handball, games took place over the weekend in the women’s European competitions. In the Champions League, on Saturday, CSM Bucharest beat Podravka Koprivnica in Croatia 33-28 and continues to occupy 4th place in the Group B standings. CSM will play its next home match against the leader, Brest Bretagne, on February 8. Gloria Bistrița is also in 4th place in Group A, after being defeated at home by Győr, the leader of the standings, 27-22 on Sunday. The Transylvanian team will play its next match on February 7, against Metz, away.
In the EHF European League, all Romanian teams played on Saturday. In Group A, Minaur Baia Mare was defeated away by the German team Thüringer 33-32, but continues to occupy first place, tied on points with the Hungarian team Mosonmagyaróvár, but with a higher goal difference. In Group C, Rapid beat Oldenburg from Germany 34-30 in Bucharest and climbed to 2nd place in the standings. In Group D, Corona Brașov tied 33-33 away with the Danish team Viborg, and is in 3rd place in the standings.
In the derby of the Romanian Super League stage, on Sunday, CFR Cluj beat FCSB 4-1 in Bucharest. With this defeat, FCSB, the defending champion, significantly reduced its chances of securing one of the top 6 places that send it to the play-offs. On Friday, FC Argeș beat Metaloglobus 2-nil in Clinceni, and Dinamo Bucharest defeated Hermannstadt 2-1 in Sibiu. On Saturday, Universitatea Cluj defeated Unirea Slobozia 1-nil at home, and Universitatea Craiova won the game against FC Botoșani 2-nil at home. On Sunday, Farul Constanța won the game against Petrolul 1-nil in Ploiești. The last two games of the round are held on Monday: Oțelul Galați vs. Csikszereda and UTA vs. Rapid Bucharest.
