Tension is building up at society level, with many accumulated grievances and a decline in purchasing power in recent months, leading citizens to hold a dim view of the current governing coalition, president Nicușor Dan told an interview on a private TV station. The head of state noted, however, that the measures implemented and the sacrifices made by citizens have improved the country’s financial situation, ensuring, as the executive has assured, that equally harsh decisions will not be needed this year. At the same time, there are no grounds for concern regarding the coalition amid tensions between representatives of the main parties governing in Bucharest: PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR, the president argues:

“This week, I spoke to each of the three leaders: Mr. Bolojan, Mr. Fritz and Sorin Grindeanu, to see how the year is starting. Regarding public policies, there are of course diverging viewpoints, but nothing of excessive concern. The important thing is that they are succeeding together in meeting mid-term objectives. That’s how politics works, when coalition parties often disagree on many issues”.

President Dan acknowledged the coalition isn’t working clockwork, as political vision differences create challenges, but he said progress is visible. The high level of tensions within the coalition is also evident in investors’ concerns. This prompted Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan to offer his own clarifications.

During a meeting with a delegation of investors coordinated by Bank of America, representing 13 major international investment funds, the Prime Minister expressed optimism about maintaining governmental stability and supporting the coalition’s priorities: absorbing European funds, public spending discipline, debureaucratization, bolstering investments in the defense industry and technology transfer. “Starting spring next year, the Prime Minister’s mandate will be handed over to PSD. We intend to honor that agreement”, Ilie Bolojan further conveyed, adding that in recent years, things have not worked well in Romania partly because politicians failed to respect their agreements. At the business meeting, the head of government also noted that starting 2027, Romania will become a net exporter of natural gas, referring to Black Sea deposits, and stressed the importance of keeping a portion of this resource in the country to develop industries that have faced challenges in recent years.
